Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many food and drink products contains high levels of sugar, which can cause serious health issues. Sweet products should be expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar. I agree because this will improve overall health, in addition to focusing on better alternatives.

There is no doubt that sugary products can be helpful in some cases. For example, people who feel dizzy or who are hypoglycemic often need sweet drink to refresh them. However, these sugary beverages and food can cause more harm than good if they are consumed in large quantities. For instance, one of the most serious health issue that high amount of sugar causes is diabetes, which can be a life-threatening condition if left untreated. By increasing the price, we can lower the number of people developing diabetes and ensure that people who have diabetes are getting appropriate care without putting pressure on healthcare.

Moreover, rising the cost of sugary drinks and food will encourage people to look for more healthier options, which in-turn will improve their health. There are many beverages and food that give the same effects as the products that are loaded with sugar. For example, there are companies that make sugar-free carbonated drinks, which gives the sense of freshness as the sugary products. The same goes for food as well. Food that are less in sugar can be a better alternatives than the ones that are loaded with sweets. These will not cause cavities and can help benefit the body overall.

In conclusion, I agree that the cost of sweet drinks and food should be at a higher price since it will not only encourage people to involve more healthy choices in their diet but also will enhance their overall health and prevent developing more serious conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the link between sugar and diabetes, and the suggestion of healthier alternatives. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument about 'hypoglycemic' individuals is a minor point that does not significantly advance the core debate about taxation. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the economic or social implications of the tax policy more thoroughly. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, ensuring the task requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the use of cohesive devices like 'However,' 'For instance,' and 'Moreover' helps guide the reader. While the structure is sound, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the shift between the health benefits of sugar and the argument for taxation could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is generally clear, though the repetition of 'sugary products' and 'food' could be improved by using more varied cohesive devices or pronouns to link ideas more fluidly across sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hypoglycemic,' 'carbonated,' and 'life-threatening.' There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'rising the cost' (should be 'raising') and 'more healthier' (a double comparative error). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is occasionally lacking. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and avoiding redundant phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and natural control required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use complex sentences, there are several recurring grammatical errors. For example, subject-verb agreement issues appear, such as 'products contains' (should be 'contain') and 'one of the most serious health issue' (should be 'issues'). Additionally, there are errors in pluralization and comparative structures, such as 'better alternatives' (should be 'a better alternative'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and plural forms would significantly improve your accuracy.
