Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's contemporary society, the consumption of food and drinks containing high concentration of sugar has become increasingly popular. Some people believe it may lead to various health problems and should be reduced by increasing the prices of that products, while others believe it can be controlled by proper counselling and awareness from healthcare professionals.

One of the main advantages of introducing taxation is that it would be less affordable for low and middle-income families. Consequently, the consumption patterns would be lowered among half of population. In addition, the intake of food and drinks containing refined sugar is high due to fast-paced lifestyle as people get less time to prepare proper healthy meals, resultantly their trend towards fast food increases. By imposing tax, people would automatically choose healthy alternatives.

On the other hand, proper awareness has a significant role to play. By this, I mean governments can conduct seminars and morning shows by inviting healthcare professionals and require them to spread awareness among people. This would be quite beneficial because people tend to influence by the well-educated personalities and would change the way people think. Secondly, governments can reduce the prices of healthy and orgainc products. This would not only reduces the intake of food among people but also shifts people's interest towards healthy options.

In my opinion, although taxation can lessen the consumption of products containing high amount of carbs, I believe a balanced approach should be considered by imposing tax and raising awareness among people.

All things considered, imposing tax can be beneficial in lowering the intake of food having high sugar, while its combination with proper counselling would produce more productive outcome.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt effectively by discussing whether sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage reduced consumption. You present a clear position from the introduction through to the conclusion, advocating for a balanced approach that combines taxation with awareness campaigns. The ideas are generally well developed, such as explaining how taxation affects low and middle-income families, and how healthcare professionals can influence public perception through media. However, some arguments could be extended further; for instance, the link between fast-paced lifestyles and fast-food trends is mentioned but not fully explored in relation to taxation. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, demonstrating a solid understanding of the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the advantages of taxation, the role of awareness, and your final opinion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences and paragraphs, for example using 'Consequently', 'In addition', and 'On the other hand'. However, some cohesive links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and referencing can occasionally be vague, such as 'By this, I mean...' which is somewhat informal for an academic essay. Additionally, the transition between paragraphs could be smoother to enhance the flow of argumentation.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'contemporary society', 'consumption patterns', 'refined sugar', and 'healthcare professionals'. There are occasional word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'high concentration of sugar' instead of 'high concentrations', 'orgainc' (a spelling error for organic), and 'tend to influence by' instead of 'tend to be influenced by'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey your meaning without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses. You demonstrate good control over several complex forms, as seen in sentences like 'One of the main advantages of introducing taxation is that it would be less affordable...' However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text, including 'that products' instead of 'those products', 'half of population' missing an article, 'resultantly their trend' (run-on/awkward punctuation), and 'products containing high amount of carbs' where 'amount' should be plural. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede the overall communication of your ideas.
