Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been observed that many people are now addicted to sugary products such as soda drinks. This is very harmful for human health and cause many problems like obesity, heart disease and diabetes. I firmly agree with the given statement. My inclination is elaborated in following paragraphs.

The foremost argument to justify my stand is that manufactured products that have a high quantity of sugar, are the root cause of many health diseases. This is because that it has a high amount of laboratory manufactured glucose and sugar that cause diabetes and obesity. In addition to this, a large number of teenagers are addicted to soda drinks nowadays. This lead to the deficiency of calcium from their bones and eventually leads to arthritis.

Furthermore, a high intake of sugary product can cause dizziness and headache. For instance, in Pakistan a survey was conducted in 2023, in which it was found that 80% of the people who eat more sugary products such as cakes and cookies are obese. Therefore, the government should impose heavy taxes on these products and should maintain a standard level of sugar in every products. In addition to this, government should also encourage the use of healthy products such as eggs, rice and many more like this, by organizing awareness campaigns. On the other hand, soda drinks are also important for people who have acidity problems.

In conclusion, while it is true that soda drinks are important for people who have acidity problems. However, this is very dangerous for human health. By imposing heavy taxes on sugary products and organizing awareness campaigns against them would be more beneficial and will encourage people to consume less sugar and move towards healthy food. Therefore, I strongly agree with the given statement that sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position throughout that manufactured sugary products should face higher taxes to reduce consumption. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of health risks like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, and the role of government intervention. However, some ideas tend to over-generalise or lack deeper extension, such as the sudden pivot regarding soda drinks being important for acidity problems in the third and fourth paragraphs, which feels contradictory and slightly confusing. Furthermore, the phrasing 'in every products' contains a minor grammatical slip, but overall, the student covers the prompt adequately and maintains a consistent stance, fulfilling the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as general health diseases in paragraph two and government solutions in paragraph three. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition 'On the other hand, soda drinks are also important for people who have acidity problems' is abrupt and disrupts the logical progression of the argument about taxation and healthy alternatives. Referencing is also slightly repetitive with phrases like 'In addition to this' appearing multiple times. Overall, the organizational structure is easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'addicted', 'deficiency', 'awareness campaigns', and 'intervention' (implied). There are, however, some noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'health diseases' instead of simply 'diseases' or 'health problems', and minor pluralisation issues like 'every products'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the lexical range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the text, placing this response firmly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as 'It has been observed that...' and 'This is because that it has a high amount...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, notably 'cause many problems' (subject-verb agreement with 'This'), 'This is because that it has', and 'This lead to' instead of 'This leads to'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of grammatical slips in complex sentences prevents the score from reaching a higher band. Nevertheless, the errors rarely impede overall communication, reflecting the typical profile of a Band 6 performance.
