Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether sugary products should be made more expensive and offers alternative solutions such as public awareness campaigns and government regulation. A position is generally stated, agreeing with the idea that prices should be higher, though the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and disjointed at times. For example, the writer mentions that sugary products are cheap and easily bought, but this point is not fully extended with concrete economic analysis or detailed examples. Furthermore, the discussion shifts abruptly between taxation, educational campaigns, and government limits on sugar content without deep elaboration. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the arguments remain somewhat basic and lack the thorough development expected for higher bands. Therefore, a band score of 5.5 is appropriate for Task Achievement as it presents a relevant stance and supporting ideas, but suffers from under-development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays an overall arrangement with discernible paragraphs, but progression is frequently hindered by mechanical or faulty cohesive devices. Words like 'However' and 'Therefore' are misused or overused to start sentences where they do not logically contrast or conclude the preceding thought, such as starting a paragraph with 'However, sugary products ought to be really expensive.' Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph unity is weak, with ideas jumping abruptly between pricing, children's screen time, dental health, and government regulations. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, for example using pronouns without secure antecedents. Transitional phrases are somewhat repetitive and mechanical rather than fluid. These issues place the response firmly at band 5.0 for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited and sometimes repetitive range of vocabulary adequate for basic communication. Words such as 'products', 'sugar', 'health', and 'prices' recur frequently throughout the text. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'taking high level of sugar' instead of 'consuming high levels of sugar', 'side affects' instead of 'side effects', and 'teeths' instead of the correct plural 'teeth'. Attempts at less common vocabulary yield awkward phrases like 'beyond the limits of people'. Spelling errors like 'bevrages', 'held' (used for past tense of hold events), and 'goverment' appear. These lexical inadequacies and errors cause some difficulty for the reader, leading to a band score of 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. Frequent grammatical errors impede readability, such as sentence fragments and incorrect clause structures: 'As, the prices of sugary products are cheaper and they can easily bought by anyone.' and 'If the prices of these products will be beyond the limits of people. They will stop eating these food and bevrages.' The passive voice is mishandled ('can easily bought'), and conditional structures are incorrectly formed (using future tense in the 'if' clause). Punctuation errors are also prevalent, including misplaced full stops that break up dependent clauses. Due to these frequent errors and the high frequency of faulty complex structures, a band score of 5.0 is awarded.
