Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people says that many manufactured food and drink products contain high level of sugar. Which causes many health problem. And most of people says sugar products should be more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar. In my opinion, i agree on the this that sugar can more expensive although we tell government that increase the tax on manufactured industry.

We everyone know that in food and drink manufactured in these products high level of sugar and it is directly causes of many health problems. Firstly, increased the prize of sugar products it is automatically to reduces the selling products this is because mostly people are often expending on higher prizes. For instance, in my country, when the prize of soft drinks are increased people are less buy of this product although they buy insisted of juice and water. This is show that prize can change people buying habits.

Secondly, government take care of this manufactured if the food and drinks manufactured are add high level of sugar then governments should increase the tax on these products. if people take high level of sugar in every product it will cause of health problem such as obesity and diabetes. For example, in UK, soft drinks industry levy government should add a tax of uses of sugar in soft drinks and then company reformed of their products

In conclusion, I agree that sugary products should be made more expensive because it will help reduce sugar consumption and also help protect public health. Governments should continue to use this method along with education to solve this growing health problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that sugary products should be made more expensive through government intervention and taxation to tackle health issues like obesity and diabetes. Key ideas are presented, such as reduced purchasing habits when prices rise and the success of the UK soft drinks industry levy. However, the development is somewhat limited and repetitive, and the ideas are occasionally underdeveloped or imprecise. While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the reasoning tends to generalise and lacks deeper extension in certain sections, placing this response comfortably at Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student uses basic cohesive markers like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', but sentences are often disjointed due to grammatical breakdowns, making the progression of ideas clunky. Referencing and pronoun use are also weak, as seen in phrases like 'this is because mostly people are often expending on higher prizes'. Paragraphing is present and appropriate for the task structure, but overall logical flow is hindered by awkward sentence boundaries and fragmented ideas, leading to a Band 5.0 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for discussing health and taxation, using terms like 'obesity', 'diabetes', 'tax', and 'consumption'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward collocations, and incorrect word forms throughout the text. Examples include 'prize' used instead of 'price', 'expending' instead of 'spending', 'less buy of this product', and 'company reformed of their products'. These lexical inaccuracies and restricted phrasing cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band, resulting in a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and flawed attempts at complex constructions. There are frequent and intrusive grammatical errors that interfere with readability, such as sentence fragments ('Which causes many health problem.') and subject-verb agreement or tense issues ('Some people says', 'government take care', 'increased the prize'). Punctuation is also problematic, with lowercase letters starting sentences after periods and run-on structures. Because control over grammar is weak and errors are persistent across the text, a Band 5.0 is awarded.
