Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, many companies are producing foods and beverages that contain high sugar content and this has resulted into various kinds of health problems, as a result many people suggest that these products should be made more costly so that people will be discouraged to purchase them. Personally, I disagree with the view that beverages that contain high sugar should be more expensive because of the financial benefits of the nations and companies and it can affect people in lower class of economic.

The primary reason why i disagree with this view is because of both the companies and governments financial benefits. This means, when products with high sugar contents are too expensive for the public, it will affect the manufacturer sales and in turn they wont be able to pay a substantial tax to the government. Although governments can generate revenue from different sectors, companies that produce these drinks and foods also add to the economic prosperity of a nation. For instance, if Cocacola company decides to increase the price of each bottle, it will affect their sale and their tax.

Another principal reason for my disagreement is that making these products expensive will affect people in lower socio-economic class that are menial labourers. This is because some people need this drinks to boost their energy and increase their glucose level, so when these products are no longer affordable they might switch to hard substances for energy renewal. For instance, if a bricklayer who works under the sun is deprived of sugar he might collapse due to lower blood glucose.

In conclusion, the primary driver behind my disagreement is that increasing the price of sugary beverages and foods can affect the economical value of the the manufacturing companies and nations and it can also affect people who are in lower socio-economic class that perform heavy task.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position against increasing the price of sugary products, supporting it with two main arguments: economic impacts on businesses and governments, and the practical needs of lower-income labourers. The position is maintained throughout the response. However, the ideas are somewhat under-developed, particularly the economic argument, which relies on a brief and slightly unsupported example involving the Coca-Cola company. The reasoning regarding manual workers needing sugar to prevent physical collapse is also a bit simplistic and over-generalised. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed, but the development of ideas aligns best with a Band 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall arrangement with a distinct introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "The primary reason why i disagree" and "Another principal reason for my disagreement," providing a clear roadmap for the reader. However, some referencing is slightly clunky, and transitional phrasing can feel a bit mechanical. Paragraph progression is logical, though the links between sentences occasionally feel repetitive. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 descriptor for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like "manufacturer sales," "economic prosperity," and "socio-economic class." However, there are notable word choice and collocation issues, such as "financial benefits of the nations" instead of "economic benefits for nations," and "affect people in lower class of economic." There are also minor mechanical errors such as lowercase "i" and the missing apostrophe in "Cocacola company." While the student attempts less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in word formation and collocation prevent the response from reaching a higher band, placing it at a solid Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses like "when products with high sugar contents are too expensive for the public..." and "if a bricklayer who works under the sun is deprived of sugar..." There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as "resulted into various kinds of health problems" (instead of 'resulted in'), "discouraged to purchase them" (instead of 'discouraged from purchasing'), and "this drinks" (instead of 'these drinks'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though some run-on sentences occur. The frequency of non-systematic errors places this essay at a Band 6.0 level.
