Student answer (Band 6.0)

These days some people seem argue that various products such as food and drinks contain a huge amount of sugars which harms people with many health issues. Therefore, the best suggested way is that such products cost should be more expensive so people can consume less sugar items. However, I agree to a great extent with the idea that those high contained sugar products should be more expensive so citizen would avoid to buy them.

In the first place, it would be quite interesting to note that high sugar intake leads to severe health issues such as obesity, diabities and heart problems. Higher prices of sugar products will definitely discourage people to consume less. One illustration for this is that, Mexico has been implemented the higher prices on sugar labelled products and they experience a huge declined in consumption of sugar items. Another major advantage of this side of the topic seem to be that, increasing taxes on sugar products will encourage people to consume altnernative healthier and dietary foods such as, fruits, nuts and water. For instance, UK introcduced huge amount of taxes on sugar related items and now manufacturers are reformulating their products with less sugar and using more healthier and nutrients ingredients.

To put this issue into third perspective, which is worth considering is that treating more sugar related products often put burden on goverment decided healthcare budget. If authorities increase price of sugar then it might be possible that the number of suffering patients will decrease. economic burgen on healthcare will also minimise. For example, mexico report shows that, after increasing taxes on sugar items. Hospitals experienced the report cases of sugar has been decreased.

In conclusion, I am convinced to say that it is indeed a debatable issue which needs futher analysis and discussion. However, in the light of above-discussed arguments and examples. I am quite safe to conclude that the advantages of higher prices of sugar overweigh its disadvantages and far outweigh in many aspects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position agreeing with the proposal to increase the prices of sugary products. Main ideas are supported by examples, such as the references to Mexico and the UK. However, some ideas are slightly repetitive, and the examples are stated generally rather than fully elaborated. For instance, the discussion regarding government healthcare budgets links the points together logically, though the development tends to rely on assertion rather than deep analysis. Nevertheless, the position is well-maintained from the introduction to the conclusion, satisfying the main requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 response. Overall, the task is addressed adequately and clearly throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is divided into a clear introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an overall logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'In the first place', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are some awkward transitions and mechanical uses of cohesion, such as 'To put this issue into third perspective', which sounds unnatural and somewhat unidiomatic. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments, but referencing and logical flow occasionally falter due to phrasing issues. Overall, cohesion is functional but occasionally awkward, fitting the descriptors for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'reformulating', 'consumption', and 'alternative'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors throughout the response, including 'diabities' (spelling error for diabetes), 'sugar labelled products', 'economic burgen' (spelling error for burden), and 'report cases'. Furthermore, phrases like 'high contained sugar products' and 'consumption of sugar items' reflect unnatural collocations. While these lexical slips and errors do not entirely impede communication, they restrict the score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional and relative clauses ('If authorities increase price of sugar then it might be possible...'). However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text. Examples include 'some people seem argue' (missing infinitive marker), 'such products cost should be more expensive' (faulty structure), 'Mexico has been implemented' (incorrect passive voice), and 'the advantages of higher prices of sugar overweigh its disadvantages and far outweigh' (redundancy and grammatical awkwardness). These errors occasionally cause strain for the reader, aligning the grammar with a Band 5.5 score.
