Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that sugary products should be made more expensive. The writer attempts to support this with ideas regarding health problems like diabetes, heart issues, and tooth damage, as well as the economic deterrent of higher prices. However, the task achievement is constrained significantly by two main factors. First, the essay falls well short of the 250-word minimum, containing only 203 words, which directly limits the depth of ideational development. Second, some arguments remain under-developed and abruptly cut off, as seen in the incomplete concluding sentence 'Therefore'. Despite presenting relevant ideas, the lack of full development and failure to meet the minimum word count prevent the essay from achieving a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response has some basic organization with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and an attempted conclusion. However, overall progression is hindered by choppy paragraphing and abrupt endings. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or mechanically deployed, such as overusing 'For example' and 'As a result' without seamless integration. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the essay lacks a proper concluding statement due to trailing off with the word 'Therefore'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow of ideas often stumbles due to run-on sentences and punctuation errors, placing this criterion at a band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling and word-choice inaccuracies. Examples include spelling errors such as 'dieset' (diseases), 'intial' (initial), 'helth' (health), 'teech' (teeth), 'Moroerer' (Moreover), 'diabites' (diabetes), 'puchase' (purchase), 'bugdet' (budget), and 'suary' (sugary). While the writer attempts some less common topic-specific vocabulary like 'formative year' and 'natural and healthy product', the numerous errors in spelling and collocation strain the reader and obscure precise meaning. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, but frequent slips keep it at a band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'Many people this these sugary product become very expensive so that less people consume it' and '...puchase it,it may affect thier bugdet.' There are also persistent subject-verb agreement and article errors, such as 'every individuals life', 'many food and drink industries make a product', and 'take whole life to control it'. Grammatical errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, matching the descriptors for band 5.
