Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing the health impacts of sugary products and presenting a clear position on whether they should be made more expensive. The writer expresses an opinion in the introduction and concludes by reiterating support for government intervention and taxation. However, the development of ideas tends to be limited and slightly disjointed in places. For instance, the discussion moves abruptly from chemical functioning in the brain to physical conditions like diabetes, and the mention of younger children and banning products appears suddenly without full elaboration. While the main stance is clear, some arguments regarding natural sources and processed foods are slightly over-generalized. Overall, the response fulfills the basic requirements of the task, earning a band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into four paragraphs, providing a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs presenting opposing views, and a conclusion. However, cohesion at the sentence level is frequently faulty or mechanical. There are noticeable missing spaces after punctuation marks throughout the text, such as in 'methods. We' and 'One hand,if'. Cohesive devices are sometimes used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'On the one hand' followed immediately by another 'On the one hand' in the subsequent paragraph instead of a contrasting transition like 'On the other hand'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly with pronoun usage regarding 'sugar' and 'it'. Paragraphing is present, but internal logical progression requires better signposting to guide the reader smoothly, placing this criterion at a band 5.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'processed', 'preservative', 'flavorants', 'hypoglycemia', and 'detrimental'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the writing, including 'drupts' for disrupts, 'drasticaly', 'accomulated', 'willl', 'Chemicaly', 'Pacakging', 'childern', 'habbits', 'threathing', 'porper', and 'do built'. Some expressions are unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'intake more then the required amount' and 'cheaper price'. Although the intended meaning usually remains clear despite these flaws, the frequent lexical inaccuracies limit the score to a band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with conditional structures and subordinate clauses, as seen in 'if you intake more then the required amount in less duration of time it can be injurious to health'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors including subject-verb agreement issues ('sugar are the building blocks'), incorrect prepositions, and persistent punctuation and capitalization errors. Run-on sentences and comma splices also occur, such as in the concluding paragraph where multiple clauses are joined without adequate punctuation. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse meaning, which aligns this performance with a band 5.0.
