Student answer (Band 6.0)

The intake of Sugary food has become a debate recently. Many people believe that majority of the food or drinks produced today contain great amount of sugar and these should be made more expensive so that the people are less aligned to have sugary diets, while other contradict with this belief. My opinion sides with the initial point. This essay will elaborate on my views.

A little bit of sweet harms no one but the excess may have adverse effects. The over intake of sugar harms our health as our body is designed to handle a limited amount of sugar and upon its excess the body struggles to handle it well. For instance, if a person keeps sugar intake continous, their liver has to over work and produce balancing hormones. Overtime, the liver will cease to produce the needed amount of benefiting harmones and eventually make the person insulin resistant. Many people today face this disease earlier on in their life. This is how too much sweet in our diet negatively impacts our health.

I completely agree with the point that sugary items should be relatively expensive. This way people opt for a cheaper alternative with low to no sugar at all. For example, if a person is thirsty and has to make a run for a drink but the sugary drinks are more expensive than the non-sugary ones, the person is more likely to purchase the non-sugary products. This way people would be more aligned on purchasing non-sugary edibles.

In conclusion, many people are of the opinion that lots of manufactured products today contain high amount of sweet and making those products expensive would be a better option while others are against it. I remain in favour of the initial opinion. High amount of sugar in food and drinks leads to health issues and making those products higher in price would be a better way to encourage people not to consume them and choose cheaper non-sugary alternatives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position agreeing with the prompt and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding health impacts and consumer choice. The position is maintained throughout the essay. The first body paragraph provides a logical discussion on the physiological effects of excessive sugar intake, such as liver strain and insulin resistance. The second body paragraph explores the economic angle, suggesting that higher prices for sugary items would steer consumers towards healthier alternatives. While the ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, some explanations are slightly repetitive or over-generalized, placing the response solidly at Band 7.0 according to the task response descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It follows a traditional four-paragraph structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as transitional phrases like 'For instance', 'I completely agree', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of phrases like 'Many people' and 'This way'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, though some sentences in the introduction and conclusion echo each other heavily. Overall, the essay meets the criteria for Band 6.5, showing clear logical progression despite some mechanical cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'physiological', 'insulin resistant', 'alternatives', and 'edibles'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'intake of Sugary food has become a debate' instead of 'topic of debate', 'great amount of sugar' instead of 'a large amount', 'align to have sugary diets', and 'continous' (spelling error). Phrases like 'A little bit of sweet harms no one' are slightly informal for an academic task. These vocabulary limitations and occasional errors place the lexical resource score at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional forms such as 'if a person keeps sugar intake continous, their liver has to over work'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, such as missing articles ('majority of the food', 'liver has to over work'), incorrect preposition usage ('contradict with this belief' instead of 'contradict this belief'), and spelling/word-formation issues ('overtime' used as an adverb instead of 'over time', 'harmones'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching Band 7.0. The grammar aligns best with Band 6.0 descriptors.
