Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether sugary products should be made more expensive to reduce consumption. However, the task requirement for a minimum of 250 words is not met, as the essay contains 245 words, which negatively impacts task achievement. Furthermore, the position is somewhat repetitive and lacks full development. While the writer agrees with the prompt and mentions raising prices and using commercials, the ideas remain basic and lack extended argumentation or sophisticated supporting examples. The introduction also misunderstands the prompt slightly by stating 'this essay will discuss...' rather than providing a clear thesis statement. Therefore, the response aligns with Band 5 as it addresses the task only partially and presents ideas that are limited and under-developed, compounded by the under-length penalty.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into several paragraphs, though some paragraph breaks are unusual, such as single-sentence introductory elements. Overall organisation shows some attempt at progression, moving from personal country context to children and finally to government intervention and pricing. However, the logical flow is disrupted by weak or mechanical cohesive devices. Phrases like 'Overall, this essay will discuss...' and 'The disease called sugar and diabetes is a worldwide issue' are repetitive and formulaic. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and paragraphing is not always used effectively to group related ideas. This places the response firmly at Band 5 due to basic organisation and inadequate or repetitive cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite limited and repetitive throughout the text. Words like 'sugar', 'products', 'high level', and 'consume' are repeated excessively. There are notable lexical and collocation errors, such as 'most produced cuisine and beverage products' instead of 'manufactured food and drink products', and 'wellness issues' instead of 'health issues'. The phrase 'a disease called sugar and diabetes' is unnatural. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'corporations' and 'manufacture industries', but inaccuracy in word choice and collocation remains noticeable. These limitations restrict the lexical range to a minimally adequate level, warranting a Band 5 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures frequently result in grammatical errors. Examples of errors include 'many citizens are affecting by a disease' (passive voice error), 'So, authorites should have to take action' (spelling and modal verb misuse), and 'I am strongly agree' (adjective/verb confusion instead of 'I strongly agree'). Punctuation is also faulty in places, such as starting sentences with conjunctions inappropriately and fragmenting thoughts. Errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, though the general meaning remains mostly decipherable. This performance is consistent with the Band 5 descriptors.
