Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether sugary products should be made more expensive. However, the position is somewhat unclear and underdeveloped. Furthermore, the length requirement is NOT met, as the student's response contains only 193 words, which falls significantly short of the 250-word minimum. This results in a heavy penalty for task completion. While the student mentions that manufactured food contains high levels of sugar causing health problems and agrees that people should consume less, the supporting ideas are repetitive, limited, and lack sufficient extension. Examples, such as drinking green tea in India, are simplistic and do not fully develop a robust argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The overall progression of ideas is difficult to follow due to poor formatting, a lack of clear paragraphing, and abrupt shifts between points. For instance, the transition from manufacturing profits to Indian tea drinking habits lacks logical connection. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive, making the text feel disjointed. Referencing is frequently unclear, as seen with phrases like 'They contain the sugar in daily basis' without a clear antecedent. While there is a basic attempt to group sentences together, the absence of proper paragraphing and logical links severely impacts the overall coherence of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive throughout the response. The student relies heavily on simple words and basic phrasing, such as 'high levels of sugar', 'health problems', and 'food and drinks products'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'they effect many health problems' instead of 'affect', 'sugar releted health problems', and 'was drunk tea many time in day'. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate to convey the core message, but frequent inaccuracies in word choice and spelling prevent the writer from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences and basic structures. Attempts at more complex structures are largely absent or faulty, such as in the opening sentence: 'Many manufactured food and drink products contain high level of sugar, they effect many health problems.' Punctuation is weak, characterized by missing spaces after commas and run-on sentences. Grammatical errors are frequent, including missing plural forms, incorrect verb tenses ('many people was drunk tea'), and prepositions ('in daily basis'). These frequent errors and the lack of structural variety place this text firmly in the lower bands.
