IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a recent debate that several manufactured foods and drinks contain high amounts of sugar, which has become a source of many health problems. Because these products are high in sugar, they are more expensive, which motivates people to cut down on sugar consumption. I strongly disagree with this statement because a person who earns well is definitely capable of buying these kinds of products, and they are not aware of the disease result

The main reason I disagree with this statement is that many people are well established. They earn well, and they can afford any product with high taxes. For instance, many individuals are entrepreneurs in our country. They go to random grocery shops and buy products without considering the price tag. Therefore, they don't feel any inconvenience about the high-priced products and the purpose of these taxes.

Secondly, another reason is that many individuals don't have enough knowledge about how to count calories in products. For example, a person who is a trainee at any institute doesn't know how to count calories. In addition, these products are a huge source of health problems, such as high amounts of glucose, which can cause many diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. As a result, the constant use of high-sugar products leads to serious diseases and health issues.

However, the government should organize awareness camps for residents to inform them about the results. They should inform them about the complete boycott of these products and how to avoid these circumstances.

Conclusively, I disagree because the implementation of huge taxes on these items is not the only solution to these diseases. Moreover, awareness of these calories can benefit many people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position of disagreement with the idea of making sugary products more expensive. However, the development of ideas in the main body paragraphs lacks clear focus and logical consistency. For example, the student writes, 'Because these products are high in sugar, they are more expensive, which motivates people to cut down on sugar consumption' in the introduction, which confuses the cause-and-effect relationship proposed in the prompt. Furthermore, the argument that rich entrepreneurs will simply ignore higher taxes touches upon the affordability aspect, but the subsequent points regarding calorie counting and government awareness camps drift somewhat away from directly refuting the specific mechanism of taxation. Therefore, while a clear position is maintained throughout, the ideas are partially under-developed and occasionally confusing, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction, distinct body paragraphs, and a concluding remark. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as the discussion on wealth in the second paragraph and consumer awareness in the third. However, the logical progression is at times weakened by abrupt transitions and mechanical cohesive devices. For instance, the use of transition markers like 'Secondly, another reason is' and 'In addition' feels slightly repetitive and clumsy. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'to inform them about the results,' where the pronoun antecedent is ambiguous. These issues prevent the essay from achieving a higher score, placing it firmly at Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'consumption,' 'entrepreneurs,' 'awareness camps,' and 'boycott.' However, there are noticeable limitations and occasional awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'the disease result' in the introduction and 'constant use of high-sugar products' instead of 'frequent consumption.' Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, but the lack of flexibility and occasional imprecise phrasing restrict the score to a Band 6. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the intended meaning, though it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinate clauses and relative pronouns such as 'a person who earns well' and 'products that can cause many diseases.' However, grammatical errors and awkward phrasing are frequent throughout the response. For example, the opening sentence contains a misuse of collocation and structure ('There is a recent debate that...'). Other errors include awkward phrasing like 'they are not aware of the disease result' and minor punctuation slips. While these errors do not severely impede overall communication, they occur regularly enough to prevent the grammar score from rising above Band 5.5, reflecting a performance straddling Bands 5 and 6, ultimately fitting Band 5.5 based on error frequency.
