Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often argued by some people that the main cause of the health problems is many factors use high level of sugar in food and drink. The prices of sugar product is high to encourage human to consume less sugar. Although some might disagree with this notion, I completely agree. Not only because of good quality of food for health and better life, but also because of economic benefit.

There are multiple benefit associated with the less use of sugar levels in food. Firstly, the quality of the food is good for health. As low levels of sugar used in food so the quality of food is good for health. Take an example, the famous chief of the Japan said we should make the quality of food is better only if we used low levels of sugar in food. Thus, low levels of sugar help to make good food.

Secondly, better life is the another benefit of this. As we eat good food over health is good and we enjoy a better life. For instance, the people of China, spend a better life because they use small quantity of sugar in food. Hence, good food help to spend a better life.

Finally, economic benefit is also the advantage of this. As the prices of sugar product is high government should get more tax and the economic of the country should grow.

To sum up, I believe that good quality of food, better life and economic benefit the sugar product should be made more expensive.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly taking a position agreeing that sugary products should be made more expensive. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The arguments regarding health benefits and economic advantages are stated simply without deep elaboration. For instance, the points about food quality, better life, and economic benefits are frequently reiterated rather than fully extended with robust reasoning or varied examples. The reference to a 'famous chief of the Japan' is vague and under-developed. Because the student maintains a clear position throughout and addresses all parts of the prompt, albeit with some over-generalisation and thin support, the response fits the Band 5 to Band 6 profile, leaning toward Band 5.5 due to under-developed main points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays basic overall coherence with visible attempts at paragraphing and structuring arguments using signposting expressions such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Finally', and 'To sum up'. However, the progression of ideas is frequently hindered by mechanical transitions and repetitive sentence patterns. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are overused in a formulaic manner. For example, the sentence 'As we eat good food over health is good and we enjoy a better life' lacks smooth logical flow and precise connective tissue. Paragraphing is present, separating the introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but the internal logical links between sentences within paragraphs are often weak, aligning the response with Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive throughout the essay. The student frequently recycles fundamental terms such as 'sugar', 'food', 'health', and 'better life' rather than employing synonyms or a wider lexical field. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'many factors use high level of sugar', 'sugar product' instead of 'sugar products', and 'famous chief' instead of 'chef'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic message that higher taxes on sugary items could improve public health and the economy, the limited range and frequent inaccuracies place it squarely at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. While there are a few attempts at complex sentences using conjunctions like 'although' and 'as', these structures are often faulty or incomplete, such as in the fragment 'Not only because of good quality of food for health and better life, but also because of economic benefit.' Simple sentences dominate, and frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement ('the prices of sugar product is high'), articles, and prepositions ('spend a better life because they use small quantity of sugar') cause noticeable difficulty for the reader. The frequency of errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band, making Band 5 an appropriate evaluation.
