Student answer (Band 5.5)

Many manufactured food and drink products contain high level of sugar, which may cause many health problems. By making sugary products much more expensive can encourage people to consume less sugar.

Overall, I believe that this is not the permanent solution to remove this issue from it's roots. But this will make some of the people to consume less sugar.

Susequently, in many countries people love sweet dishes ot products. For example, in Pakistan, if the sugary products will become much more expensive they will still buy it because they cannot stop having sweet products so, this will not make the people to remove the sugary products totally. But this can reduce the rate of having sugar. As a result, the health problems will also reduce.

Moreover, this solution will only work on poor people who will not able to afford the sugar or sugary products. But as it is an essential product, these poor will still buy it any way. Even if they would have to steal it, snatch it or having it illegality. This will only cause crimes in the society. In addition, rich people will still do not care about the price and buy it because they have blind money. As a result, this sloution is useless and will not work the way we want.

In conclusion, the government of the countries should think about some other solutions for this problem. They should banned some much harmful sugary products so that people cannot find it out. There are many other more solutions like this. But this problem will not ended quickly. This will absolutely take a long time because many people do have the sugary products as they are addicted to them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether raising the price of sugary products is an effective solution to health issues. A position is presented, stating that while it may partially reduce consumption, it is not a permanent fix and could lead to negative consequences like crime among poorer populations. However, the development of ideas tends to be simplistic and slightly disjointed, particularly the extreme assertion that poor people might resort to stealing or snatching to buy essential sugary items. Additionally, some arguments lack clear support or generalise excessively. While all parts of the task are addressed, the depth of exploration corresponds to a Band 6 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is organized into distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, maintaining an overall coherent arrangement. However, logical progression within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions and faulty referencing. For instance, transitional markers like 'Susequently' are used inaccurately, and sentences in the body paragraphs lack smooth connections. Paragraphing is attempted, but some paragraphs contain underdeveloped thoughts that disrupt the flow of information. Cohesive devices are occasionally mechanical or misused, placing this aspect of the writing firmly at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but range and precision are limited. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'permanent solution', 'addicted', and 'essential product', but also makes noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'high level of sugar' instead of 'high levels', 'blind money' instead of 'disposable income' or 'wealth', and 'having it illegality' instead of 'illegally'. Spelling and morphological errors ('Susequently' for 'Consequently', 'sloution' for 'solution', 'ended' for 'end') are present, though they do not severely impede overall communication. These limitations align with Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional clauses ('if the sugary products will become much more expensive they will still buy it') and relative clauses ('products which contain high level of sugar'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in tense consistency and modal usage, such as 'By making sugary products much more expensive can encourage' (subject-verb structure error), 'will still do not care', and 'They should banned' (modal error). Punctuation and article usage also need improvement. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
