Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The candidate addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of disagreement with the idea of making sugary products more expensive. The response presents relevant ideas regarding health problems caused by sugar, as well as counter-arguments related to personal liberty and the difficulty of implementation. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the second paragraph mentions hectic lifestyles and children consuming sugary beverages, but these points are not fully extended. Furthermore, the third paragraph contradicts the thesis somewhat by suggesting that higher costs might actually encourage healthy eating, before the fourth paragraph switches back to arguing against the price hike. While the task is adequately addressed to meet the basic requirements of the band, the reasoning lacks consistency and full extension.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing a clear attempt at paragraphing. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by contradictory arguments and abrupt transitions. For example, the phrase "Apart from this" introduces an argument supporting the tax in the third paragraph, directly conflicting with the writer's stated thesis of complete disagreement. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as "On the contrary" and "as evident from the above discussion that, making sugar products... have some postive impacts." Referencing is also sometimes unclear, creating a disjointed reading experience that pulls the overall coherence score down to a band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. Examples include "sell more costly" instead of "sold at a higher price", "assocated" (a spelling error), and "consuming of sugar" instead of "consumption of sugar". The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like "hectic lifestyle", "obesity", and "liberty", but these are overshadowed by frequent lexical errors that occasionally cause strain for the reader, such as "every people have the right" and "maturity to think". The range is sufficient for the task to be understood, but accuracy is lacking, aligning closely with the band 5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is quite low throughout the text. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. Examples include "processed food and beverages carries" (plural subject with singular verb), "while, some people believe that sugary products ought to be sell" (passive voice error), and "every individual have maturity". Punctuation is also problematic, notably with intrusive commas placed incorrectly, such as "fully disagree , with this given assertion". While the meaning can generally be deciphered, the high frequency of errors places this response firmly in the band 5 category.
