Student answer (Band 6.5)

A lot of produced food and drink articles include high levels of sugar, which leads to many health issues. Products that contain sugar should be more costly in order to encourage individuals to concume less sugar. I personally agree with this statement and in this essay I will write about why it is useful to pay more for sugary products.

Firstly, less sugar consumption is beneficial for an individual's physical and mental health, because not only the body is fitter, but there will be less addiction to sweets and sugar. This would result in less obesity and overweight. To give an example, if a man does not want to pay more for sugary products than for vegetables and fruits, he is more likely to buy healthy food instead of the processed, unhealthy variant. Thus, the individual will get used to consume less sugar and feels more active during the day. While it may be true that it seems unfair that people who earn a greater salary still have the opportunity to buy sugary products, it is still significant to raise those prices to establish a healthier lifestyle in people's lives.

Another argument is that too much sugar consumption leads to diseases such as type 2 of diabetes in the long run. In order to prevent an outbreak of those illnesses, sugary articles should cost more money. For example, if someone has a tendendy towards special diseases due to consuming sugary products, they would be more encouraged to eat healthy if the prices for those food types are much more expensive. As a result, this individual won't suffer from or develop an illness in the future.

To conclude, high levels of sugar causes severe health problems. That is why sugary articles should be more costly. It wouldn't only benefit the individuals mental well-being, but also would prevent people from further diseases.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear and consistent position in agreement with the statement. The writer's stance is maintained throughout the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Main ideas are presented and supported with relevant examples, such as comparing the prices of sugary goods to fresh fruits and vegetables, and discussing the long-term risk of type 2 diabetes. While some arguments could be extended further with deeper economic or public health analysis, the core position is well-supported and clearly meets the requirements of the task. The ideas flow logically from personal habit formation to broader health consequences, demonstrating a good grasp of the prompt's core debate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The introduction successfully outlines the writer's position, and the body paragraphs are structured around distinct supporting points. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Another argument is that', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a specific sub-topic. Reference words are generally handled well, though occasional slight improvements in referencing would enhance the flow even further. Overall, the essay is coherent and easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task. Phrases such as 'processed, unhealthy variant', 'mental well-being', and 'establish a healthier lifestyle' show a good attempt at less common lexical items. However, there are a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'produced food and drink articles' instead of 'manufactured food and drink products', and a spelling error in 'concume' instead of 'consume'. There is also a slight lexical slip in 'type 2 of diabetes' instead of 'type 2 diabetes'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('if a man does not want to pay more...') and relative clauses ('which leads to many health issues'). There are several error-free sentences, demonstrating good control over basic grammar. However, a few grammatical errors and awkward phrasings persist, such as 'gets used to consume' instead of 'gets used to consuming', and 'high levels of sugar causes' where the verb does not agree with the plural/uncountable noun context. Punctuation is generally sound, and while errors do occur, they are infrequent enough that they rarely impede communication.
