Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some packaged food and beverages products made up with the high quantity of sugar, which leads to several health issues. The products which contain high amount of sugar ought to be costly to encourage public for less consumption of sugar. I largely agree with this notion because the companies will reduce the use of sugar in beverages and packaged food, and public will initiate towards sugar alternatives instead of sugar.

First of all, sugary products may cause several health problems such as diabetes, respiratory problems and obesity, hence, sugar should be expensive to avoid the utilzation of it in different products. If sugar is costly, then big companies will minimise the use of sugar in their products, which is basically a positive impact on the society. For instance, countries of Europe have increased the price of sugar and sugary products, which directly leads to high life expectancy of their citizens because they consume healthier products rather than unhealthier like soft drinks and chips. Therefore, companies may lower the use of sugar in substances, people will consume more healthy products and this will be advantageous to individuals' health.

Secondly, if price of sugar increases, people will use another healthier alternatives of sugar, which raises healthy lifestyle. In other words, consumers may switch to healthier alternatives because they will want to avoid paying more for products with high sugar content. For example, if sugary soft drinks become more expensive, individual may prefer water and coconut water, which is beneficial for their body as well. Thus, consumers will intend to use heathy products instead of expensive sugar, which is also unhealthy for their well.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that sugary products should be expensive that public may avoid them to consume sugar because this not only reduces the use of sugar in different merchandises but also consumers may switch to healthier alternatives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear throughout: you largely agree that sugary products should cost more, and both body paragraphs give relevant reasons. You explain that higher prices could prompt manufacturers to reduce sugar and encourage consumers to choose alternatives, with examples such as water and coconut water. These ideas are extended with cause-and-effect reasoning, and the conclusion restates your view. The discussion is therefore well focused and supported. However, some claims are over-generalised or not fully explained, particularly the assertion that European price increases directly lead to higher life expectancy. Clarify how the policy affects consumption and health, and distinguish a tax on sugary products from a rise in the price of sugar itself, to make the support more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, while examples generally appear alongside the point they support. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, transitions can feel mechanical, and the first body paragraph repeats the same outcome—that companies will use less sugar and people will be healthier—rather than developing a distinct next step. The sentence beginning “Therefore” also joins several consequences without a clear relationship. Use more precise referencing and vary links by showing cause, contrast, or result explicitly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “health issues,” “minimise,” “consumers,” and “healthier alternatives,” so the main ideas remain understandable. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “notion” and “advantageous.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “sugar,” “products,” and “healthy,” and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate: “beverages products,” “high quantity of sugar,” “utilzation,” and “intend to use heathy products.” “Merchandises” is also unsuitable in this context. These errors sometimes make the phrasing awkward, even though the intended meaning can usually be inferred. Build a more precise set of topic collocations and check spelling and word forms before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If sugar is costly, then big companies will minimise the use of sugar” and a relative clause in “alternatives of sugar, which raises healthy lifestyle.” This shows an effort to vary sentence forms. However, errors occur across the response and sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “products made up with the high quantity” has an incorrect grammatical construction, and “individual may prefer” lacks plural agreement with the general meaning. In “this not only reduces … but also consumers may switch,” the paired structure is not grammatically parallel. Punctuation is also inconsistent, as in “chips.Therefore.” Practise accurate clause construction, agreement, articles, and parallel forms, then proofread sentence boundaries.
