Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is concern for many health issues from the packaged food and drink products because they have high sugar levels in them. The government should increase the rates of these products to motivate people so they can consume less sugar. I firmly agree with this statement, as this essay will explain the benefits of the increased costs of sugar products.

People prefer consuming sweeteners or sugary products after eating food, regardless of considering their adverse effects. In order to buy those products, they visit the market and see the discounted price and offers on a specific product. Elevating the costs of processed foods can be helpful for the people because they will be unable to buy those items. For example, many countries are imposing taxes on special chocolates due to their excessive sugary content.

Sugary products lead to several health problems, such as obesity and diabetes, because sugary items carry fats and put a person's life at stake. Increasing the cost of certain products can save a person from these problems. A middle-class person prefers to buy groceries at a cheaper cost. Seeing the higher cost of a sugary product will resist him from buying something cheaper, such as water or healthy products. It can save his money to be spent on unhealthy products as well as on his well-being. For instance, spending on healthy foods has been advantageous for a person's future health.

In conclusion, to protect the people from the drawbacks of sugary products, the government should plan strategies to increase the amount of those products so they can eat a healthy diet instead of consuming excessive sugars.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you firmly agree that higher prices could reduce sugar consumption, and the conclusion returns to the idea of government action. You also give relevant reasons, including the influence of price and the health risks of obesity and diabetes. However, the two body paragraphs do not develop these points equally well. The claim that people will be “unable to buy” sugary products is too absolute, and the example of taxes on chocolates is not explained or linked to evidence of reduced consumption. The second paragraph introduces affordability and healthier choices, but the connection between raising prices and improved health remains general. Explain the likely effect on purchasing habits and support each main point with a clearer example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Each body paragraph has a central focus, and linking expressions such as “For example,” “In order to,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the first moves from post-meal preferences to discounts and then to taxes without fully showing how these points connect. References such as “those products,” “those items,” and “these problems” are understandable but can be imprecise. The conclusion also repeats the general position rather than drawing together the two reasons. Use clearer links between cause and effect, and make each paragraph develop one main argument in a more deliberate sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “processed foods,” “excessive sugary content,” “obesity,” “diabetes,” and “healthy diet.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt more formal expressions such as “adverse effects” and “imposing taxes.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision. For example, “increase the rates” is not the usual expression for raising prices, and “sugary items carry fats” does not clearly describe the health concern. “Resist him from buying” is also an awkward construction. Aim for more natural combinations such as “raise the price,” “high in sugar,” and “discourage consumers from purchasing,” while avoiding repeated use of “products” and “sugary.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “because they have high sugar levels” and a relative clause in “a sugary product will resist him from buying something cheaper.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and punctuation generally supports readability. Some grammatical errors and awkward constructions remain. In “There is concern for many health issues,” the structure does not clearly express the intended relationship; “There is concern about the health problems caused by…” would be more accurate. The phrase “regardless of considering their adverse effects” also combines structures incorrectly. In addition, “will resist him from buying” has an unsuitable verb pattern. Review prepositions and verb patterns, and check that clauses express the intended cause-and-effect relationship.
