Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is true that many processed foods and drinks contain a lot of sugar, which leads to serious health issues like obesity diabetes. Some people believe that increasing the price of sugary products is the best way to reduce sugar intake. I completely agree with this view because higher prices dicourage consumers and force food companies to make healthier choices.

First of all, higher price make people think twice before buying a sugary items. When soft drinks, chocolate and fast foods become more expensive, consumersa are less likely to buy them regularly. For example, in develop countries government introduce suagr tax on soft drinks, many people switched to drinking water or low suagr brevarages to save money. This proves that financial cost directly affects to the everyday choice, especially for low-income families budget.

Secondly, rising prices encourages food companies to reformulate their products. If a government taxes high-suagr items, manufacturers will try to lower the amount of sugar in their recipies so they can keep their products affordable. As a result, even if consumers do not change their buying habits, the food available on supermarket shelves will naturally conatin less sugar, benefiting public health as a whole.

However, increasing price alone may not completely solve the problem. Governments should also use the extra money raised from these taxes to educate people about healthy eating and make fresh, healthy food like fruit and vegetables cheaper.

In conclusion, making sugary products more expensive is an effective way to lower sugar consumption. It encourages consumers to buy healthy food and forces manufacteres to produce healthier foods.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I completely agree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the central question with two relevant reasons: higher prices may change consumers’ choices, and taxes may encourage manufacturers to reduce sugar. The example of people switching to water or lower-sugar drinks helps support the first point, while the paragraph on reformulation explains a broader public-health benefit. You also acknowledge that price increases alone may not solve the problem and suggest education and cheaper fresh food. To develop the response further, make the example more specific and explain more fully how the proposed measures would work in practice; some claims, such as companies being “forced” to change, are stated broadly rather than qualified.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: it introduces your position, presents two supporting arguments, recognises a limitation, and concludes. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “First of all,” “Secondly,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make the structure easy to follow. The ideas within each main paragraph generally develop in a logical order, especially the link between taxation and product reformulation. Cohesion is sometimes a little mechanical because the argument relies heavily on explicit sequencing phrases. Some connections could be made more smoothly by showing how one point leads to the next, and the reference to “this” in “This proves” could identify the specific evidence more precisely. Varying transitions and using clearer referencing would make the flow more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “sugar intake,” “reformulate,” “manufacturers,” “public health,” and “low-income families.” These choices help communicate the argument, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccuracies. However, spelling errors such as “dicourage,” “suagr,” “brevarages,” and “manufacteres” are noticeable, while phrases such as “a lot of sugar” and “healthy choices” are relatively general. There are also word-choice and collocation problems: “financial cost directly affects to” is not natural, and “fast foods” is less precise in this context than “fast food.” Aim for accurate spelling and more precise expressions, such as “sugar-sweetened products” and “influence purchasing decisions.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If a government taxes high-sugar items, manufacturers will try to lower…” and a concession beginning “even if consumers do not change their buying habits.” These structures allow you to explain cause and effect clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles, and prepositions. For example, “higher price make” should have a plural subject or a singular verb, and “buying a sugary items” has an article–number mismatch. In “financial cost directly affects to the everyday choice,” the verb pattern is incorrect. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and check each sentence for a natural grammatical pattern. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument.
