Student answer (Band 6.0)

Most of the manufactured food and drink items have high levels of sugar in it, which causes a lot of health problems for consumers. I do believe that prices should be increased, so fewer people consume these manufactured items, but raising awareness about the side effects of these products is more important.

People have shifted from house-made food to fast food or instantly available food. However, the food and drink contains high levels of sugar, which affects their health. For instance, some individuals drink soft drinks so much that their kidneys start getting affected over time. The government needs to increase the prices of manufactured food and drinking items, so people should think about before consuming these high-sugar products.

On the other hand, the government needs to raise awareness about these products. One cannot ignore the fact that these high-sugar level items are a big part of our economy. What the government can do is run a campaign or an advertisement to discourage people to consume these items on a regular basis. Such as, if someone should not consume these high-sugar products, they should try to refrain themselves from consuming them. They should eat a clean diet to remain healthy. Increasing the prices will only affect the poor or middle class people, by taking these products out of their range. Those who can afford it will still consume these items. That is why I believe that raising awareness about the after-effects of these high sugar levels is more important to encourage a healthy and clean diet.

To sum up, increasing the prices of high-sugar level food and drink will make people think about whether to spend it on them or not. Whereas, the government can raise awareness about the side effects of these items on society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you support higher prices but argue that public awareness is more important. You address both the proposed price increase and an alternative, and the point that higher prices may affect lower-income consumers is relevant. However, some ideas are not fully explained. The claim that soft drinks can damage the kidneys is presented without support, and the suggestion that awareness campaigns will change behaviour would be stronger with a specific example or explanation of how they work. The conclusion also repeats both measures without clearly resolving how they should be balanced. Develop the reasons behind your preference and support them with more precise examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the contrast signalled by “On the other hand” helps show the shift to your preferred approach. The main ideas are generally easy to follow. However, some links are mechanical or unclear: “Such as” introduces an incomplete example, while “Whereas” at the start of the final sentence leaves the relationship between the two measures unfinished. The first body paragraph also moves quickly from changing food habits to health effects and then to government pricing. Organise each paragraph around one main claim, explain it, and use complete linking sentences to show how the evidence supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic, including relevant terms such as “raise awareness,” “discourage,” and “side effects.” However, several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated references to “high-sugar level” products and “manufactured items.” Some collocations and word choices are also unnatural, such as “house-made food,” “instantly available food,” and “refrain themselves.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for more accurate topic vocabulary and vary repeated expressions—for example, distinguish between processed foods, sugary drinks, and products with high sugar content.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which,” “that,” and “if,” and your meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “items have high levels of sugar in it” has a plural–singular mismatch; “the food and drink contains” also does not agree with the plural meaning. The construction “people should think about before consuming” is incomplete because “think about” needs an object, and “if someone should not consume” is an awkward conditional structure. The final sentence beginning “Whereas” is also a fragment. Check agreement and sentence completeness, and revise complex clauses so their relationships are grammatically clear.
