Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowdays , many proceessed foods and drinks contain more amount of sugar , which cause lead to various health problems. Some people beleive that these products should become more expensive to reduce sugar consumption . I largly agree with the view because higher price can discourage unhealthy eating habits , although other measures are also necessary.

On the ine hand , increasing price of sugar products can encourage people to make healthier choices . Many individuals regularly buy soft drinkd , chocolates and other sweet foods beacuse they are affordable and easily available . If the prices of these products rise , consume may reduce their purchases and chose healthier alternatives , such fresh fruits and water . As a result, people may consume less sugar , which could help reduce risk of obesity and other health problems . Moreover , higher prices may encourage food manufactures to produce healthier products with lower sugar contant .

On the other hand, making sugar products more expensive may create difficulties for people with low incomes . Some consumers may countinue buying these prpducts despite the the price increase , while others may find it difficult to afford their preferred foods . Furthermore , prices increases alone cannot completely change people eating habits . Therefore , goverments should also educate the public about the dangers od excessive sugar consumption .

In my opinion , increasing the prices of high -sugar products is useful way to reduce consumption , nut it should be combined with public education and better access to affordable , healthy foods .This approach whould be ,ore effective and farier to diffrent groups of society .

In conclusion, I agree that making high-sugar products more expensive can encourage people tp consume less sugar. However , this policy should b e supported by educational compaigns and other measures to achive long -term improvements in public health.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

Your position is clear throughout: you largely agree that higher prices can reduce sugar consumption, while recognising that pricing should be combined with other measures. You address both the likely benefit—people choosing alternatives such as fruit and water—and the drawback for lower-income consumers. The point that manufacturers may respond by producing lower-sugar products also extends the argument. These relevant ideas and examples support the task well. Some development is still broad, however: the effect on purchasing is asserted rather than illustrated, and the concern about affordability is not explored in detail. A specific example or explanation of how education and access to healthy food would complement price increases would make the reasoning more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: introduction and position, benefits, drawbacks, a qualified opinion, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The contrast between discouraging consumption and the impact on low-income consumers is logically placed. Cohesion is not always smooth, though: the opening “On the one hand” is followed by “On the other hand,” but the later opinion paragraph partly repeats the conclusion rather than advancing the discussion. Some linking phrases and references feel formulaic, and spacing and punctuation around transitions are inconsistent. To strengthen progression, connect each paragraph’s final point more explicitly to the next and reduce repeated statements of your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “sugar consumption,” “healthier alternatives,” “obesity,” “low incomes,” and “public education.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and phrases such as “excessive sugar consumption” suit the formal task. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms occur often enough to limit precision: examples include “proceessed,” “contant,” “goverments,” and “compaigns.” There are also awkward or imprecise expressions, such as “more amount of sugar” and “prices increases.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce the naturalness and control expected at a stronger level. Proofread spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases, rather than translating them word by word.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If the prices of these products rise…” and a concession in “although other measures are also necessary.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the response includes some well-formed sentences. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. For example, “which cause lead to” has an incorrect verb construction, while “people eating habits” needs a possessive form; “a useful way” also requires an article. There are occasional problems with agreement and sentence punctuation, including inconsistent spacing around commas and full stops. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, possessives, and punctuation, then check each sentence for one clear main verb. This would improve accuracy while preserving your range of structures.
