Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the majority of the processed food and drink products contain high amount of sugar, which leads to health issues. Therefore, prices of these products should be increased to encourage individuals to consume less sugar. I largely agree with the proposal because this can improve sedantary lifestyle of people and motivate individuals to look after their health.

One major reason is that a significant number of people nowadays are reliant on ultra-processed food. This is because they have busy schedules which can create insufficient time to make food at home. Due to this, they may eat out on regular basis at hotels or cafes which fullfil their needs. The food they consume contains a lot of calories and high levels of sugar, which could lead to heart problems and diabetes. For instance, if governments apply taxes on restaurants, this can discourage people to consume restaurant foods and improve their sedentary lifestyle.

Another factor is that the sugary products such as soft drinks and other ultra-processed food should be made more expensive. These products are widely available in all supermarkets and even some industries are selling these products quite cheap. This can provide access to people from all background and ultimately increasing the usage of these products. Furthermore, some people can now do not function without energy drinks and they may consume that before every task. Therefore, governments should increase the prices of maunfactured food and take legal actions against those who are selling in cheap rates.

In conclusion, I largely agree that sugary products should be made more expensive because this can improve people's health problems and their sedantary lifestyles. However, legal notice should be send to those who are solding these products in cheap prices.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you largely agree that sugary products should cost more, and the conclusion returns to this view. You give relevant reasons, including the convenience of processed food and the availability of inexpensive sugary products, and mention possible health consequences such as diabetes and heart problems. However, the first body paragraph shifts from taxing sugary products to taxing restaurants generally, so the link to the proposal is not fully explained. The claim that higher prices would improve a “sedentary lifestyle” is also unclear, and the second paragraph’s point about energy drinks is not developed with a specific explanation or example. Clarifying how price increases would change consumption and supporting each reason more fully would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Due to this,” “Furthermore,” and “Therefore” help connect points. This meets the lower-band expectation for coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. However, several links are mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely: for example, “Therefore” introduces a recommendation about legal action without clearly connecting it to the preceding point about energy drinks. The reference to taxing restaurants also interrupts the focus on making sugary products more expensive. Make each paragraph develop one central argument and use transitions that show the exact cause-and-effect relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “ultra-processed food,” “high levels of sugar,” “heart problems,” “diabetes,” and “energy drinks.” These terms make the subject clear, and you attempt some less common expressions such as “sedentary lifestyle.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “improve sedentary lifestyle” does not clearly convey the intended benefit, and “selling in cheap rates” is not a natural expression. There are also spelling errors in “sedantary,” “fullfil,” and “maunfactured.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and control. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling, especially in repeated key terms, so your vocabulary communicates the argument more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including subordinate clauses with “because,” “which,” and “if,” as well as a conditional sentence about government taxes. Most ideas remain understandable, and the response shows an attempt to vary sentence structure. Some grammatical errors nevertheless occur. For example, “a significant number of people … are reliant” is followed by “they may eat out on regular basis,” where an article is needed; “some people can now do not function” has an incorrect verb construction; and “legal notice should be send” uses the wrong participle form. The final sentence, “those who are solding,” also has an incorrect verb form. Review articles, modal verb patterns, and passive constructions, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
