Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the modern world, people consume too much sugary drinks in their daily lives. On that note, numerous food companies food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Many people think that sugary products should be made more costly to encourage people to consume less sugar. I completely disagree with this statement.

There are many reasons justifying my opinion. Firstly, nowadays, people want materialistic life and they work hard for buying expensive things. If the sugary products become costly, people buy that products because they are addicted with products. So they do not see the price of that sugary products. Secondly, if the sugary products become costly, it effects the sale of company. Many people not buy that products. As a result, company revenue automatically decrease.

Furthermore, mostly all products have sugar in their ingridents and people require some level of sugar in their body. If they stop consuming sugary products its harms their health. For example, if any people stop consuming sugary products totally then their sugar level of body decreased significantly which cause many serious health problems. Moreover, in some products sugar play important role like sweets. If they make sweets without sugar it does not taste good. So it is significantly require to add sugar in some products. Thus, there are the reasons justifying my opinion.

To conclude, even though expensive sugary products can encourage people to consume less sugar. However, I completely disgagree with this phenomenon because many people expensive sugary products because they are addicted with it and some products does not made without sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion: you disagree with making sugary products more expensive. You also give reasons, including possible effects on company sales and the role of sugar in some products. However, the response only partially addresses the question because the reasons are limited and some do not convincingly support your position. For example, saying that addicted consumers will buy products regardless of price does not explain why prices should not rise, while the claim that reducing sugar would lower people’s blood sugar and harm their health is not adequately supported. Develop fewer, more relevant arguments and explain them with accurate examples. The 14 words copied from the task prompt are excluded from the stated word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Furthermore” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and the links between claims and conclusions are weak. For instance, the point that higher prices could reduce company revenue does not clearly establish why the policy is wrong, and “Thus, there are the reasons justifying my opinion” repeats rather than advances the argument. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “if” and “because.” Make each paragraph focus on one main reason, then connect its explanation and example explicitly to your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “consume,” “health problems,” “addicted” and “company revenue.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. Examples include “people want materialistic life,” “effects the sale of company,” and “their sugar level of body.” There are also spelling errors such as “ingridents” and “disgagree.” Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling and word forms carefully. For example, you could describe consumers as “price-insensitive” or say that a price increase may “reduce demand,” rather than repeating “costly” and “buy that products.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including conditional forms such as “If the sugary products become costly…” and a concession in the conclusion. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction can make the reader pause. Examples include “people consume too much sugary drinks,” “people buy that products,” “company revenue automatically decrease,” and “some products does not made without sugar.” The conclusion also joins contrasting ideas awkwardly with “even though” followed by “However.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement, plural nouns and verb forms, and make sure each sentence has a clear grammatical structure. Accurate simple sentences would strengthen the argument before you add more complex ones.
