Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people believe that making smoking illegal is the most appropriate way to discourage smoking but other says that various other measures should also be consider for this which is my opinion too. Both the views are being elaborated in the following paragraphs.

According to the first view, government of the country should implement the laws that smoking is prohibited in the public areas as there are numerous people there who are allergic to the smoke and smell. It is also not good for the children and the environment. This will results in making people do a second thought before doing smoking in public places. For example, In country like Dubai, there are various activities that are considered as illegal in order to make it discontinued by the general public such as drinking. So, this could be a relevant way to stop smoking as well.

On the other hand, other people's views is that there should be some other measures needs to be taken to completely abandoned smoking in the peoples area. This can be done by constructing separate smoking area for the smokers. For example, In Canada there are a number of vape stores has been built as smoking areas for the people who like smoking. This has reduced the number of people who smoke in public areas.

In conclusion, Making smoking an illegal activity is not sufficient to stop people smoking some other ways such as developing vape stores for them can help to reduce smoking is also required. This is also my opinion to adopt some other measures for this cause.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the impact of smoke on children and the environment, these points are not fully extended. The example regarding Dubai is slightly vague, as it equates smoking with drinking without explaining the mechanism of discouragement. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with logical consequences. The conclusion effectively restates your position, but the overall depth of the argument remains at a basic level, as the ideas are presented rather than thoroughly explored.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'According to the first view', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is unclear, such as 'other says' and 'this is also my opinion'. The use of cohesive devices is sufficient to guide the reader, but the lack of more sophisticated linking words or varied referencing techniques keeps the coherence at a functional level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'prohibited', 'illegal activity', and 'discourage'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'do a second thought', 'peoples area', and 'completely abandoned smoking'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a limited range of vocabulary. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that word forms (e.g., 'abandon' vs 'abandoned') are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('other says', 'other measures needs to be taken', 'a number of vape stores has been built') and incorrect verb forms ('This will results in'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of these grammatical slips is noticeable. To achieve a higher score, you need to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical rules, particularly subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency.
