Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people believe that smoking should be considered illegal specially in the public places and it can be helpful to discourage the people to quit their habit of smoking. However, others think that banning smoking is not an ideal solution instead others measures can give better results to solve this issue. I completely agree that public awareness and promoting healthy lifestyle have more benefits.

The people those are in favour to make smoking illegal says that it would help the people to get rid of bad habit of smoking . when the government implement strict rules regarding smoking at public places like hospitals, parks and train stations then people would avoid to smoke . Moreover, charging higher fines to whose who do not follow the rules can automatically demotivate others to quit smoking.

The opponents of banning smoking believe that it is not enough and government should use the social media and television to create awareness about the heath issues that smoking causes to human body. it is because the young people spend most of their time on social websites therefore, these websites are the best and cheap source to reach thousands of people. Ai based videos and content can be used by government to catch the people's attention on health issues.

I strongly believe that schools and parents can play an important role to educate the children to lead a healthy lifestyle and stay away from drugs and smoking. The teachers and parents can explain the children to take healthy diet, doing exercise and how the smoking causes fatal diseases. These measures can definitely contribute to make smoking free society to some extent.

In conclusion, I would say that if people are forced to quit smoking by banning it in public places without letting them know the bad effects of smoking on their health. they would continue doing it whether they have to pay the fines and face punishment. So, awareness is important to curb this issue .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the use of social media for awareness and the role of education. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding fines is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of its practical effectiveness. The position is consistent throughout, but the essay would benefit from more depth in the supporting arguments to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, meeting the requirements for a balanced discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although there are minor issues with sentence-level flow, such as the abrupt start to the final paragraph. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the argument, and the reader can easily follow the writer's line of reasoning throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'demotivate' and 'fatal diseases', which are used correctly. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'specially' instead of 'especially' and 'smoking free society' instead of 'smoke-free society'. The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the people those are in favour'), subject-verb agreement ('the people... says'), and punctuation (missing spaces after periods). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'The teachers and parents can explain the children to take healthy diet'. These errors occur throughout the text but do not significantly impede communication. To improve, the writer should focus on article usage and consistent verb tense agreement.
