Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to fully address the prompt. While it touches on the idea of banning smoking in public, it does not adequately discuss the 'other measures' mentioned in the prompt, focusing almost exclusively on the ban itself. Furthermore, the essay is under the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. The position is somewhat clear, but the arguments are repetitive and lack the depth required for a higher band. To improve, you must ensure you address all parts of the prompt equally and provide more substantial, well-developed arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear structure. There is no introduction or conclusion, and the paragraphing is ineffective, with most of the text contained in one long, disjointed block. The use of cohesive devices is limited and often mechanical (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', 'Therefore'), and the logical progression of ideas is frequently interrupted by abrupt shifts in topic. Referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of the argument. Improved paragraphing and a wider variety of linking words are necessary to enhance the logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, often relying on simple terms like 'bad', 'dangerous', or 'problem'. There are significant issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'drugs man' instead of 'drug users' or 'take cig grate' instead of 'smoke cigarettes'. Spelling errors are frequent (e.g., 'enviornment', 'voilence', 'illeagal'), which occasionally impedes the reader's understanding. To reach a higher band, you need to expand your vocabulary to include more precise, academic terms and focus on accurate spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'smoking create', 'some man are stand'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, lacking proper punctuation. While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, they are often faulty and lack control. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles before attempting more complex structures.
