Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people belive that the best possible way to descourage smoking is to make smoking illegal in public places and other belive that this is not enough and there should be some other measures are needed. In my opinion, only making smoking illegal in public places is not enough and we need to follow some other measures as well. We will dicuss both views in below paragraphs.

First of all, banning smoking in the public places is good initiative to keep the enviorment of public places safe for non smokers and kids.It will reduce the affect of 2nd hand smoke to non smokersFor example, banning smoking in the resturant will keep the air clean for non smokers. Who wants to enjoy the meal with their kids and elders..However, smokers can still smoke in private places or there homes. For example, most of the big Airports building are non smoking zone but they provide a room where smokers can smoke any time.

Secondly, smoking can be discourage by increasing the price of cigerate. This can be done by increasing the tax on the cigerate so less people can afford it.Another option is to ban the smoking for under 18 years old. This will discourage teenagers to start smoking and get addicted to it.For example in Norway no one under age of 25 is allowed to smoke and 90% of there young generations are non smokers.

To discourage smoking we can also use the social media campaign for health awareness and collages and universities can do semenars to educate people about smokers health problems to avoid start smoking.

In my opinin only making smoking illegal in public places is not enought to discourage people. Increasing the cigerate price, banning smoking under 18 and starting social media campaign to educate people will help to achive this goal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of public health, economic measures like taxation, and educational campaigns. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding Norway is a good attempt at support, but the explanation of why public bans are insufficient could be more deeply explored. The structure is clear, and the position is maintained throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with more depth and logical connection to the main argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. There is a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'First of all', 'Secondly'). Some transitions between sentences are abrupt, such as 'Who wants to enjoy the meal with their kids and elders..', which lacks a clear connection to the previous sentence. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the flow and coherence of the writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some spelling errors, such as 'belive', 'descourage', 'enviorment', 'resturant', 'cigerate', and 'semenars'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited; using more precise or academic synonyms would elevate the response. For example, instead of 'good initiative', one could use 'effective strategy', and instead of 'cigerate', use 'tobacco products'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('other belive', 'there should be some other measures are needed'), article usage ('the public places'), and punctuation (missing spaces after periods). While these errors are present, they rarely impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed correctly. The current level of control is sufficient for a band 5.5, but more consistency is needed for a higher score.
