Student answer (Band 5.0)

While many individual contend that the greatest way to prevent from smoking is to make smoking prohibited in the public zone, other opine that this things are not sufficient so we need to go take other major steps. In my opinion, while public bans are essential to protect the overal community health but there must be combined with educational compains and higher taxation to successfully reduce smoking rates.

On the one hand , phohibited smoking in the public zone is best as its protect the health of puplic. In the public spaces all aged people are present especially children and old ages people have low immunity so they can get the differential ailness due to smoking .For instance , since last 5 years children under 5 as well as people over 50 faced the problem of short breathing because of smoking habbits in public. So Government should ban the smoking in the commin area especially parks , buses , resturant to safe the health of general public.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views—public smoking bans versus additional measures—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the essay is severely incomplete, cutting off abruptly in the second body paragraph after only 167 words, which falls well short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Because the essay is truncated and stops mid-thought ("on the other side,"), the ideas are left significantly under-developed, and parts of the task are left unanswered. Consequently, Task Achievement is penalised heavily for length and lack of full development, aligning with the Band 4 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The student attempts a standard organizational structure, including an introductory paragraph with a clear stance and distinct body paragraphs. Basic cohesive devices such as 'While', 'On the one hand', and 'For instance' are used to connect ideas. However, the overall progression breaks down entirely because the essay ends prematurely. Furthermore, paragraphing is disrupted by the incomplete text, and mechanical referencing is occasionally noticeable, such as 'this things' instead of 'these things'. While logical sequencing is attempted at the sentence level, the overall arrangement cannot be fully evaluated as coherent due to the abrupt halt of the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common collocations and topic-related terms like 'prohibited in the public zone', 'overal community health', and 'differential ailness'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text, including 'individual contend' instead of 'individuals contend', 'greatest way' instead of 'best way', and 'short breathing' instead of 'shortness of breath'. Spelling and word-choice errors are frequent enough to detract from the quality of the writing, though they do not completely impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses starting with 'While'. However, control over grammar and accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('this things are not sufficient'), incorrect prepositions ('prevent from smoking'), and missing articles ('ban the smoking in the commin area'). Punctuation and spacing errors are also present, such as missing spaces after commas and periods. These recurring errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the grammar score from reaching Band 6.
