Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, touching upon both views regarding smoking bans in public places and presenting a position, though it is not always clear or fully supported. While the first body paragraph attempts to explore why some people support public bans due to passive smoking, the development is limited and slightly repetitive. Furthermore, the final paragraph becomes highly confused, repetitive, and tails off mid-sentence, which prevents the ideas from being fully developed. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a well-developed position with fully elaborated arguments for both sides without trailing off or repeating points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organization with an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and a concluding sentiment, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas, particularly in the latter parts of the essay. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as repetitive transitions and referencing that is not always clear. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final sections disintegrate into disconnected thoughts rather than a coherent conclusion. To improve, the writer should ensure each paragraph flows logically into the next, utilizing a wider and more accurate range of cohesive ties to guide the reader seamlessly through the arguments.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'trecharious' and 'compulsary', but these contain spelling errors and inaccurate word choices. Other lexical slips include phrases like 'doing smoking' and 'took as an illegal act'. To achieve a higher score, the student must expand their vocabulary range, pay closer attention to word formation and collocations, and minimize spelling mistakes to ensure smoother communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a limited range of structures, with frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, as seen in errors with verb forms and subject-verb agreement, such as 'trend of smoking has raising' and 'Chain smokers has the habit'. There are also issues with article usage, prepositions, and incomplete sentences, particularly towards the end of the response. To progress, the writer needs to improve grammatical control over basic and complex sentence structures, ensuring correct verb tenses and minimizing frequent errors.
