Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on how to discourage smoking and clearly presenting a personal opinion in favour of banning smoking in public places. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the argument about public areas giving freedom to youngsters is introduced but supported only by a weak, anecdotal example about visiting a beach and observing a homeless person asking for a cigarette. While a clear position is maintained throughout the essay, the supporting arguments lack sufficient extension and depth, preventing the response from reaching a higher level of task fulfillment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the differing views and the writer's stance. However, cohesion is at times faulty or mechanical. Words and phrases used to guide the reader, such as 'commencing with the most silent reason' and 'In campandium', are awkward or inaccurate. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, and the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs stumbles due to abrupt transitions, which keeps the organizational flow at a moderate level.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, featuring a restricted range of words and persistent errors. The student attempts to use less common items, such as 'multifarious ramifications', 'acaccord', and 'aliments', but these are frequently misused in terms of collocation and word choice. There are also notable spelling and word form mistakes throughout the text, including 'constuctive', 'ciggerate', 'infaction', and 'enbracing'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors create noticeable strain for the reader and impede smooth communication, reflecting the boundaries of a limited lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentence forms while attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text that cause difficulty for the reader. Issues include problems with verb forms and tenses, missing or incorrect articles, prepositions inside grammatical patterns, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'government provide short term courses obligatery' and 'there are chances might older people and small childen get infaction'. These persistent errors restrict the grammatical repertoire and mean that error-free sentences are the exception rather than the rule.
