Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally, which places it at this band level. Importantly, the length requirement is NOT met: the student's response contains 242 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum, with 33 words copied directly from the prompt left uncounted. The student attempts to discuss both views regarding smoking in public places, but the ideas remain very limited and under-developed. For instance, the prompt asks to discuss both views and give an opinion, but the writer merely touches upon banning smoking and introducing 'smoke boxes' without fully exploring the arguments. Furthermore, the position is not always clear, and the conclusion is extremely abrupt and fails to summarise the main arguments effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
Information and ideas show some basic organisation, but they are not arranged coherently throughout the response. While the writer attempts to use transitional markers such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by confusing statements and poor referencing. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs contain disjointed thoughts, such as mixing the idea of smoke boxes with childhood habits and job problems. Repetitive phrasing and mechanical cohesive devices are evident, which hinders the overall flow and logical progression of the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent errors that strain the reader's understanding. The student relies heavily on simple words and phrases, and attempts at less common vocabulary often result in noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and form, such as 'Few masses' instead of 'Some people', 'commiunity', and 'public disturbens'. Spelling errors are also present throughout the text, including 'Goverment', 'fouse', and 'paraghraph'. These lexical limitations mean the vocabulary is only minimally adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, relying primarily on simple sentence structures, while attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. Errors are frequent and often distort meaning, making it difficult for the reader to follow the intended message. There are persistent issues with verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as in the opening sentence 'to smoking illegal in public placesa' and 'These habits is not good'. Punctuation and preposition use within grammatical patterns also show frequent inaccuracies throughout the text.
