Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response recognises that smoking is harmful and suggests measures such as government checks and limiting the number of cigarettes sold. However, it does not adequately discuss both views in the question: the case for making smoking illegal in public places is not explained, and the additional measures are listed rather than evaluated. The opening is difficult to interpret, and the claim that some people consider smoking suitable for daily use does not clearly represent the view that public-place bans are insufficient. Your opinion is broadly that smoking should be reduced, but it is not stated as a clear, reasoned position on the two approaches. To strengthen the response, explain the benefits and limits of public bans, then compare them with measures such as sales restrictions or health education, using relevant examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is some paragraphing, and the response moves from general comments about smoking to possible measures and then to health effects. However, the progression between these points is difficult to follow, and the paragraphs do not clearly organise the two sides of the discussion. Connectors such as “over all” and “almost” do not establish clear relationships between ideas, while repeated references to smoking and harm make the response feel circular. Some sentences also run together, making it unclear where one point ends and another begins. A clearer structure would use one paragraph for the argument supporting public-place bans, another for further measures, and a conclusion that states your view. Use linking phrases to show contrast and cause, rather than relying on repetition.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a basic range of topic-related vocabulary, including “illegal in public places,” “government,” “suppliers,” “nicotine,” and “lungs.” These terms show an attempt to discuss smoking and its effects. However, vocabulary is often repetitive, and inaccurate word choice or spelling sometimes makes the meaning difficult to understand. Examples include “adducted” for people addicted to smoking, “mental relife,” and “cigar” where “cigarette” may be intended. Phrases such as “best quality cigar” are also unsuitable because they suggest a recommendation rather than a health argument. Build a more precise set of expressions for policy and health, such as “smoking ban,” “tobacco sales,” and “health risks,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both short statements and longer sentences, for example, “Nicotine directly reach's to human brain and suddenly change behavior.” However, sentence structures are mostly simple or incomplete, and errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries are frequent. In that example, the subject and verbs do not agree, and the sentence needs articles. The opening, “The smoking topic is very informative and that illustrate,” also has an unclear clause structure. Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, including lowercase sentence beginnings and spaces before punctuation. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine related ideas with clauses such as “Although a public ban can reduce exposure, it may not stop smoking at home.” Proofread each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
