Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is no denying fact that smoking is dangerous to health. According to some people, smoking should be banned in public places to discourage smoking, while other suggest that more actions are also necessary. According to me, implementing laws for smoking in public places is not enough, it will take more efforts to discourage smoking.

To begin with, smoking is quite popular across the globe. There are people suffering from smoking addictions and are quite helpless towards this behavior. So, implementation of laws will help them to reduce a smoking habit specially in public. However, there are quite flaws in this concept such as one can have assess to smoking zones to feed their addiction. To illustrate, let us take an example of warehouse workers, who work long hours in smoking prohibited zones but still not quit smoking because they can fulfil their needs in smoke friendly areas.

Public places restriction on smoking is beneficial but more changes are recommended to discourage smoking. Rising in smoke prices is one of the essential part that leads to diminish smoking. Moreover, governments should contribute by implementing limits on smoke purchases. This will help individual to minimize smoking. Furthermore, public awareness is crucial to reduce passive smoking specially in households with children. It is essential for individuals' to know about diseases caused from smoking. Advertisements are the stimulating way to spread awareness.

In conclusion, despite all the favorable outcomes of prohibiting smoking in public places I would recommend to implement more rules and regulations against smoking because smoking have dangerous effect on smokers health as well as on people accompanying them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: public-place restrictions can help, but further measures are needed. The response also gives relevant supporting points, including smoking zones, higher prices, purchase limits and awareness campaigns. This covers the task, but some ideas are more fully addressed than others. The example of warehouse workers is difficult to connect to the claim that restrictions discourage smoking, since it mainly shows that access to designated areas may allow the habit to continue. The proposed price rises and purchase limits are also listed without explaining how they would work or why they would be effective. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation or a specific example, and make the comparison between the two views more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on public-place bans, a paragraph on additional measures, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the progression, and the position remains consistent. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, several transitions feel mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always clear—for example, the warehouse-worker example does not clearly support the point about the limits of public restrictions. The second body paragraph also moves quickly from prices to purchase limits and then awareness. Use more precise links to show how each point develops the argument, and organise related measures into a clearer sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “smoking addictions,” “passive smoking,” “public awareness,” and “prohibiting smoking.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, inaccurate word choice and collocation are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning awkward, as in “have assess to smoking zones,” “feed their addiction,” “smoke friendly areas,” and “Rising in smoke prices.” Repetition of “smoking” and “smoke” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural combinations such as “access to designated smoking areas,” “satisfy their nicotine cravings,” and “increase tobacco prices.” Check word forms and spelling carefully, and choose precise terms such as “tobacco products” rather than using “smoke” to refer to cigarettes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “because,” and “despite,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “This will help individual to minimize smoking.” However, there are some errors in agreement, articles, sentence boundaries and possessives. For example, “other suggest” needs a plural subject and verb, “smoking have dangerous effect” has agreement and article problems, and the comma in “is not enough, it will take more efforts” joins two independent clauses incorrectly. The sentence beginning “There are people suffering…” also has an unclear reference in “this behavior.” Review subject–verb agreement, articles and punctuation, and practise combining clauses accurately while retaining your range of sentence structures.
