Student answer (Band 6.5)

Recently, some people believe that the consumption of meat should be banned because consuming animals for food is inhumane. I strongly disagree with this opinion because animals serve a source of nutrients and also livelihood for many.

To begin with, meat provides essential nutrients which is beneficial to man. These nutrients includes proteins, vitamins, fat and oil, and vitamin B12 which is necessary for development. For instance, children, pregnant women and adults on strict diets may need these nutrients in order to grow and survive. When a child or pregnant woman lacks certain nutrients, there is noticeable retardation in growth of the child or fetus which will lead to health issues such as malnutrition. Therefore, eating meat as a part of balanced diet contributes to good health.

Secondly, animal family supports economic development. This is because, buying and selling meat is inevitable because many people depend on livestock farming to survive. Farmers, butchers, transport workers and food suppliers earn their living from it. For example, in rural areas livestock farming is one of the major source of income. Every market has a butcher who sells meat and the citizens will always look forward to purchasing one. With this in mind, completely banning meat consumption will negatively affect local economy and also render some people unemployed.

Although, I believe that animals should be treated humanely and with unnecessary cruelty. Some of these animals such as dogs serve as pets to man. They provide comfort and companionship to humans and therefore animal cruelty should be prevented . However, this can achieved by the animal welfare rather than banning meat consumption altogether.

In conclusion, although animals provide companionship to people, it is likewise important to note that meat consumption provides daily nutrients and support economic growth therefore it should not be banned.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear position throughout. You have provided two distinct arguments—nutritional value and economic impact—to support your disagreement with the statement. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, although the third paragraph regarding animal welfare feels slightly disconnected from the main argument and could have been better integrated into the overall stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that every paragraph directly reinforces your central thesis without introducing potentially conflicting points that require further qualification.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Secondly,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the third paragraph is a bit weak. For instance, the transition 'Although, I believe...' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that each paragraph flows naturally into the next will help elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consumption,' 'inhumane,' 'livestock farming,' and 'unemployed.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'animal family' instead of 'livestock industry' and 'fat and oil' which is not a standard nutritional term. Additionally, there are some repetitive phrases. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid informal phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms for common words will help you achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'nutrients includes' should be 'nutrients include') and punctuation errors (e.g., 'Although, I believe...'). There are also minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'major source of income' instead of 'a major source.' While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures.
