Student answer (Band 6.5)

Humans should never consume meat because of the cruel treatment of animals on farm whereas some people think consuming vegetarian products can improve farming conditions which can help stop animal cruelty. I do partially agree with above statements which I will explain in upcoming paragraph.

To begin with, it is true that many animals suffer to a great extent on modern farms. Today many big companies torture animals by keeping them in cages where they cannot move freely or live naturally. Furthermore, these animals are often given artificial hormones and medications such as injections to yield more meat quickly. Because of this harsh conditions, many people reasonably argue that transitioning to a plant-based diet is the choice to prevent animal suffering.

However, substituting meat with plant derived products or vegetarian alternatives entirely is not a practical solution for everyone. Firstly, meat is rich in essential nutrients like vitamin B12 that are difficult to obtain from plant derivatives especially for humans with specific dietary needs or limited access to diverse foods. Furthermore, animal agriculture does not require cruelty where many small-scale industry farms prioritize high welfare standards, allowing livestock to roam freely and live in natural environment.By choosing meat from these sources , consumers can meet their nutritional needs without supporting the unethical farming practises.

To conclude, while the cruelty present in modern industrial farming is a serious issue and rearing livestock with artificial medicinal dosage forms. However, I do not believe that people should completely stop consuming meat. Instead, alternative options can be taken in amendment to support ethically sourced meat products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position that partially agrees with the statement. The arguments are relevant, covering both the ethical concerns regarding industrial farming and the practical nutritional arguments for meat consumption. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the point about vitamin B12 is well-supported, the conclusion is slightly repetitive and contains a sentence fragment ('...and rearing livestock with artificial medicinal dosage forms.') that weakens the final summary. To reach a higher band, ensure that all arguments are fully extended and that the conclusion synthesizes the main points without introducing new grammatical issues.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'However' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is a bit clunky, such as the transition in the final paragraph which is grammatically incomplete. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated terms like 'plant-derived products', 'nutritional needs', and 'unethical farming practises'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'vegetarian products' (which sounds slightly unnatural in this context) and 'in amendment to' (which is misused). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. Increasing the use of topic-specific collocations would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. For example, the final paragraph contains a sentence fragment ('...and rearing livestock with artificial medicinal dosage forms.') and a misuse of 'However' following 'while'. There are also minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. While the errors do not prevent communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on sentence structure variety and proofreading for fragments would be beneficial.
