Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is widely acknowledged that people should eat only vegetarian food because eating animals for human benefits is not good. I am in considerable disagreement with this statement because eating meat provide more nutritions as compared to eating vegetables.
To begin with, various factors are there why I strongly disagree with this statement. First and foremost, there are many places around the world, where weather is extremely cold; as a result, to tackle with severe weather conditions some people are forced to eat animals because they do not have any other option. Secondly, although fruits and vegetables are very healthy and rich in iron, fibre and vitamins, animal meat proves a boon for our body. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt but fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. While you clearly state your position, the supporting arguments are somewhat underdeveloped. For instance, the example regarding India is incomplete, leaving the reader without a clear connection to your argument. To improve, ensure that every point is fully explained and supported with a complete example. The conclusion is also abrupt and ends mid-sentence, which suggests a lack of planning. Focusing on expanding your arguments and ensuring a complete structure will help you reach the required length and improve the depth of your response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and you use basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with,' 'Secondly,' and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the abrupt ending significantly disrupts the overall coherence. The transition between the argument for meat consumption and the counter-argument is functional but could be smoother. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that connects logically to the next. Additionally, ensure your conclusion is fully developed rather than trailing off, as this is essential for a cohesive piece of writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'widely acknowledged,' 'severe weather conditions,' and 'consumption.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'eating meat provide more nutritions' (should be 'provides more nutrition') and 'animal food chain' (which is not the standard term). The word 'nutritions' is also non-count in this context. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and pay closer attention to word forms and collocations. Expanding your range of synonyms will also help you avoid repetition and make your writing more engaging.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'eating meat provide' (subject-verb agreement), 'tackle with' (incorrect preposition), and 'posses' (spelling error). There are also issues with punctuation and sentence fragments, particularly in the incomplete final sentence. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Proofreading your work for basic spelling and punctuation errors will also help improve your accuracy. Aim to use more complex structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, but ensure they are grammatically sound.
