Student answer (Band 7.0)

In this day and age, the idea that raising animals for human consumption is extreme cruelty is gaining worldwide attention. It is being suggested that a complete ban on meat consumption should be implemented for animal welfare. However, I partially agree with this notion because banning meat production would be impractical.

On the one hand, the idea of raising livestock for meat production has sparked outrage due to the increment in factory production techniques. In factory production, large number of animals are confined in limited space and unrealistic environment to meet the goal of increased profit margins. For example, pigs are kept in spaces where even a ray of sunlight is unable to reach them and some factory hens are kept in cages all the times. Moreover, the inhumane slaughter practices carried out in these factory farms are becoming the cause of increased attention towards animal welfare. These animals are slaughtered without giving any medication by the veteran to relieve their pain or making them unconscious. This insensitivity has turned factory farming into a cruel activity.

On the other hand, meat has been a part of human diet long before evolution and it has been a great source of many vitamins and minerals. Although, nutrients can be obtained from plants as well, all the individuals on this planet do not have the access to all the essential plant foods. Therefore, imposing ban on meat consumption can cause suffering for some people, who are dependent on livestock for their survival. Apart from this, in some nations of the world, there are communities and tribes who have traditional and cultural importance related to meat dishes. The complete removal of meat products from the society will hurt their emotions and traditional values.

In conclusion, although the inhumane practices carried out in factory farms are cannot be ignored, posing ban on meat would be impractical. Therefore, a balanced approach should be considered to ensure that animals are not tortured for human use and some ethical practices should be carried out while slaughtering them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding both animal welfare and human necessity. Your ideas are well-developed, particularly the contrast between factory farming conditions and the nutritional/cultural importance of meat. To reach a higher band, ensure that your conclusion does not just repeat your position but synthesizes the main points more effectively. You successfully balanced the ethical concerns with practical realities, which demonstrates a strong understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Moreover' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the flow. For instance, the link between the introduction and the first body paragraph is clear, but the internal cohesion within the second body paragraph could be tightened to avoid slight repetition of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'factory production techniques,' 'profit margins,' and 'inhumane slaughter practices' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'veteran' (which refers to an ex-soldier; you likely meant 'veterinarian') and 'increment' (which is slightly awkward in this context). Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring precise word choice will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'are cannot be ignored' (a double verb error) and 'posing ban' (missing an article: 'a ban'). Additionally, 'all the times' should be 'all the time.' While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with greater accuracy.
