To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Raising animals for the meat consumption is a cruel activity that humans have practiced since the beginning of time. I personally do not agree with this statement because we are omnivores and require key compounds that are only found in meat and not vegetables.
The statement may have been given to highlight the cruel practices that are happening in the animal husbandry sector. Activities such as cramped living spaces for animals, high amount of processed animal feeds and inhumane methods of killing can display human abuse towards the animals. In Nepal, the practice of tying a rope in the buffalo's head and hitting on the head with a hard substance until the death of buffalo can be seen as animal cruelty.
Humans along with many other primates have been eating both meat and vegetables for millions of years. Meat is the perfect source of all nine amino acids that is required for survival. Though we can survive by being a vegetarian, rearing animals for meat is easier. Since the population of humans have grown to such a large number, it is much easier to get essential nutrients from the animals for large human population compared to only relying on fruits and vegetables. To tackle the cruelty on animals, laws have been passed in the US for proper animal living condition and humane method of killing.
Though I do not agree with the never eating meat part of the statement, I do agree with the practice being cruel. We humans can tackle this by improving our animal husbandry sector and acknowledge the sacrifice of animals. This way it becomes easier to rear animals for meat and dairy needs without being cruel or abusive.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that disagrees with the absolute stance of never eating meat while acknowledging the validity of concerns regarding animal cruelty. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of animal husbandry practices in Nepal and legislative efforts in the US. The argument is developed logically, moving from the biological necessity of meat to the ethical considerations of farming. To reach a higher band, the student could further elaborate on the 'cruelty' aspect by contrasting it more deeply with the 'necessity' argument, ensuring the balance between the two sides of the debate is more nuanced.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the biological argument in the third paragraph and the ethical argument in the second. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Though', 'Since', and 'In addition', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated. For instance, the link between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect the ethical critique with the practical justification for meat consumption.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'animal husbandry', 'omnivores', 'amino acids', and 'nutrients' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'tying a rope in the buffalo's head' (should be 'around') and 'high amount of processed animal feeds' (should be 'high amounts'). While the range is adequate, it lacks the more sophisticated, idiomatic, or precise collocations that would characterize a higher band score. The writing is clear and the meaning is never obscured by the word choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the meat consumption' (unnecessary article), 'high amount of processed animal feeds' (subject-verb agreement), and 'the population of humans have grown' (should be 'has'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are occasional slips in preposition usage and article placement. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles with uncountable nouns.
