Student answer (Band 6.0)
Raising animals and then butchering them by individuals for food is brutal, so people should be vegetarian. This essay agrees with this viewpoint because killing animals for food imbalance the chain of the ecosystem and they also have their life to live as humans.
First and foremost, killing animals is cruel because it impacts the whole wildlife negatively. Each animal is dependent on their predator for survival if people will kill them abundantly it will have an adverse effect on the ecosystem. For example, in many areas fishing is prohibited to stabilize the ecosystem and maintain natural food chains for native animals. Therefore, I think when eating and killing animals can affect the whole environment non-vegetarians should avoid it.
Moreover, creatures have their own lives to live so cutting them for taste is injustice. As humans have the right to live, animals have the same life cycle and families to feed and fight for survival. If animals do have a justice system, it does mean people can kill them and end their life to serve them on tables. For instance, individuals kill beef, chicken or fish, they all grow up and start life like humans and they also have emotional connections with their families, so they feel same pain and heart break when they get apart from each others.
To conclude, people should be vegetarians because butchering animals for food consumption is brutal. It is not only a disadvantage for the ecosystem but also disobeys the rule of nature to live life and death naturally. Consequently, I bel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on ecological impact and animal welfare. However, the development is somewhat limited. The argument regarding the 'ecosystem' is slightly confused, as the student suggests that killing animals for food is the primary threat to the ecosystem, rather than focusing on the specific ethics of industrial farming. The conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which prevents a full summary of the position. While the main ideas are present, they lack the depth and nuance required for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'If animals do have a justice system, it does mean people can kill them', which creates a confusing logical link. Referencing is generally clear, but the abrupt ending of the essay negatively impacts the overall coherence and the sense of a finished piece of writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'butchering them by individuals' and 'cutting them for taste'. The phrase 'killing beef, chicken or fish' is also imprecise, as one does not 'kill beef' (beef is the meat product). While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'ecosystem' and 'natural food chains', the overall range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in collocation that occasionally hinder the flow of the argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('killing animals for food imbalance the chain') and awkward phrasing ('they also have their life to live as humans'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices and missing articles. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors is noticeable. The incomplete final sentence also leaves a grammatical structure unfinished, which is a significant error in terms of sentence control.
