Student answer (Band 6.5)

The topic of keeping animal solely for food has attracted a considerable debate among people. Many people are against the trend of fostering livestock for sake of human-eating and consider this as an act of cruelty. I completely agree with this approach and will put forward the reasons behind my notion.

The right of living life peacefully by every creature is the significant reason for why people hate animal killing. Like humans, every species should have the right of living their lives freely without someone's will. Also, similar to humans, animal also share the emotional bond with its crew. It definitely hurt them when other animals are killed or forcefully taken away from them. Thus, this cruel act should be prohibited.

Moreover, nature carries a balanced ecological system on its own where some animals are eaten by others. If humans start to interfere with already created food-chain, nature might responses aggressively by being unable to control the decreasing number of some animals. For example, some species such as lion and tigers depend upon other animals like deer for their survival, if there are less number of deer then the number of former animals will decline automatically and in worse case those may extinct.

However, some people, mostly living in area where there is scarcity of other food options, support animal eating for their survival. Although it seems valid but there are multiple other options available which can assist in these scenarios. For instances, there are various genetically modified foods techniques in existence which could be used to store and grow the crops. Thus, animal eating could be controlled.

In conclusions, killing innocent lives for temporary satisfaction is immoral and selfish act. It does not only take away their right to live but also disturb the ecological food chain.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear, consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding animal rights and ecological balance are relevant and developed, though the third paragraph regarding genetically modified foods as a solution for food scarcity is slightly tangential to the core ethical argument. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that all supporting arguments directly reinforce the central thesis rather than introducing new, complex topics like GMOs, which require more space to explain adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For example', and 'In conclusions' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'former animals' in the third paragraph, which is an awkward way to refer to predators. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, though the link between the ecological argument and the conclusion could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'ecological system' and 'genetically modified'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'human-eating' instead of 'human consumption', 'nature might responses' (grammatical error affecting lexical accuracy), and 'crew' used to describe animal groups. While the meaning is clear, the lack of precision in word choice prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of topic-specific collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('nature might responses', 'animal also share', 'it definitely hurt them') and article usage ('in area where', 'in conclusions'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic agreement and pluralization errors. The attempt at complex structures is evident, but the accuracy needs to be more consistent to achieve a higher score.
