People should never eat meat because raising animals for human consumption is cruel.

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Killing animals for consumption is not cruelty, in my view, because meat provides a lot of nutrients and such minerals that is difficult to obtain from vegetarian diet. To achieve healthy diet and rich vitamins, it is essential to raise livestock in a healthy manner with proper organic animal feed. I totally disagree with the viewpoint of not eating meat.

These days many people are suffering from many ailments such as arthritis, and osteoporosis. Physicians usually recommend to eat meat or eggs for protein, calcium and vitamin D so consuming meat is ideal way to get all these minerals. Consequently, patients can survive and cure from such illnesses. I think if humans depend on some animals, it would not be brutality, in fact it is a saver for humanity.

Another supportive argument is raising livestock costs financially. Farmers usually take care of chickens, goats and buffaloes by providing them high rich chicken feed and hay, which cost a fortune, so that they can achieve highly riches beef and mutton. If raisers are investing money and time to raising animals, it could not be a cruelty for benefits. I believe advantages far outweigh the drawbacks.

To conclude, although it is undeniable to kill animals for consumption and people should stop butchering, the healthy benefits which are getting from raising animals like protein and vitamins are essential for growing and preventing diseases. Farm facilitators are spending money and time on raising livestock for the betterment of humans. I believe people should eat meat to live healthy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. You address the prompt by discussing the nutritional benefits of meat and the economic aspects of livestock farming. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument that raising animals is not cruel because it is expensive is not logically sound, as financial investment does not negate ethical concerns. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced arguments that directly address the 'cruelty' aspect of the prompt rather than focusing solely on the benefits of meat consumption. The conclusion also contains a contradictory statement ('it is undeniable to kill animals... and people should stop butchering'), which weakens your overall position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. You use some cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'another supportive argument', and 'to conclude' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing. For example, the transition between the health benefits of meat and the financial costs of farming is abrupt. Additionally, the use of referencing is sometimes unclear, which makes the relationship between ideas feel slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'livestock', 'nutrients', 'ailments', and 'osteoporosis'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations. For example, 'highly riches beef' is incorrect; 'high-quality' or 'premium' would be more appropriate. Similarly, 'it is a saver for humanity' is not a standard expression. You also struggle with word forms, such as 'the healthy benefits which are getting from raising animals' instead of 'the health benefits obtained from'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('minerals that is difficult'), article usage ('from vegetarian diet'), and awkward sentence construction ('if humans depend on some animals, it would not be brutality'). Some sentences are also grammatically incomplete or confusing, such as 'raising livestock costs financially'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence patterns and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect verb forms.
