Student answer (Band 6.5)

Farming animals and later eating their meat for human consumptions should not be allowed as it is merciless act. I am in favour of this view and believe animals should not slaughtered as a means of food because ultimately they are living creatures and have feelings just as humans and killing them will also creates disturbance to the ecosystem and the food chain.

Firstly, just as human beings have feelings animals too have emotions, because they cannot speak they usually express their emotions through their actions. For instance, when cows are taken to the slaughter house they moo alot and also shed tears to express their pain as they are aware of of their surroundings and know what is going to happen to them next.

Secondly, killing animals for human needs also beaks the cycle of food chain. For example, if a frog is eaten by a snake which is turn is food for the birds such as eagles, so if we end up eating the snakes there wont be any food left for eagles which would ultimately lead to disturbance in the biodiversity.

However,is it evident that animals have higher protein than plants but food such as soya beans and and other grains provide a plant alternative proteins. Eating plant derived food not only preserve ecosystem but also keep one away from diseases derived from eating animals. For instance, during covid 19 the outbreak of virus was knows to be found from eating bat meat.

To conclude, it is cruel to kill animals as means of foods because they are living creatures and killing them would create problems in the ecosystem and hence people should adopt alternative food products which are not just not nutritional but also healthy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding animal welfare and ecological balance are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of cows in slaughterhouses and the food chain cycle. However, the development is somewhat uneven; the point about COVID-19 is a bit tangential and lacks a strong logical link to the core argument about cruelty. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point directly reinforces the main thesis rather than introducing loosely related examples. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'To conclude' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'However, is it evident that...'. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their opinions clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'biodiversity' and 'nutritional', which are used correctly. However, there are several word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'merciless act' (instead of 'cruel act'), 'beaks the cycle' (a typo for 'breaks'), and 'outbreak of virus was knows to be found'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the writing. Expanding the range of synonyms and focusing on accurate collocations would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('killing them will also creates disturbance') and missing articles or prepositions ('as means of foods'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors, such as missing spaces after commas. The errors are noticeable but rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and refining the structure of complex sentences.
