IELTS Writing Task 2 question
People should never eat meat because raising animals for human consumption is cruel.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There are some people who believe non vegetarian diet should not be accepted in the society due to inhuman activities are required to fulfill it. Hence, I completely agree with the statement but the economical part of the meat industry should not be ignored.
Some religious people who support this have come up with the argument that cruelty is against god's will and every soul, regardless of the size of its body, has a right to live and we, as humans do not have a right to take over their life. For instance, a hindu scripture like The Bhagvat Gita teaches its followers not to eat meat as it is against the will of god.
Hence, I also personally believe that the whole meat industry, from raising an animal to slaughtering it, should be banned but we should aslo consider its negative effects toward people who survive on this industry. A good example of this is, slaughter houses who contribute almost one fourth of the world economy combine and small business owners who play a key role running the industry completely depend on meat selling for years. They have neither got the education so they can work nor have aquired other skills. Therefore, governments can not afford to lose billions of dollars and make their citizens' life stranded.
In conclusion, I would opine that although religious poeple's emotions have been connected with the animals being killed for human consuption, we should also think about the other side of the coin who represents dependency of the businesses running on it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the ethical arguments against eating meat and the economic consequences of banning the industry. In the introduction, the writer states, 'Hence, I completely agree with the statement but the economical part of the meat industry should not be ignored,' which introduces a slight contradiction or nuance regarding the extent of agreement, but the main position is clarified throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with examples, such as referencing 'The Bhagvat Gita' and noting the economic contribution of slaughterhouses. While the reasoning could be slightly more fully developed in places to reach a higher band, the overall treatment of the prompt satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6, as all parts are addressed with relevant ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is generally coherent with an identifiable overall arrangement. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, supporting arguments, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Hence,' 'For instance,' and 'In conclusion,' although some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'Hence' at the beginning of paragraphs. Logical progression is maintained throughout, guiding the reader from religious arguments to economic considerations. This corresponds well to the Band 6 descriptors, where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, but the overall message remains clear.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'fulfillment,' 'inhuman activities,' 'slaughtering,' and 'economy.' However, there are noticeable word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'non vegetarian diet should not be accepted,' 'survive on this industry,' and 'make their citizens' life stranded.' Additionally, there is a spelling error with 'aslo' instead of 'also' and 'aquired' instead of 'acquired.' While less common vocabulary is attempted, these inaccuracies place the response firmly in the Band 6 category, as the vocabulary is adequate and errors do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-style reasoning (e.g., 'They have neither got the education so they can work nor have aquired other skills.'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including 'cruelty is against god's will,' 'do not have a right to take over their life,' and 'the other side of the coin who represents dependency.' Punctuation and article use are occasionally imprecise. Nevertheless, the meaning is generally clear and communication is rarely impeded, aligning with the criteria for Band 6.
