IELTS Writing Task 2 question
People should never eat meat because raising animals for human consumption is cruel.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that eating meat should be avoided due to the fact that raising animals for human food is heartless. I partially agree with this notion. While I see the merit in that approach, we also need to consider the advantages of eating meat to human body.
On the one hand, some people thinks that eating animal flesh is cruel because in many cultures some animals are being worshiped. For example, Muslim religion workship pigs as their God. Therefore, such communities agrue that eating pork or meat is spiritual violation. Moreover, there is no doubt that mass production of meat involves severe cruelty. In modern farms, may animals such as chickens, goats, cows, and sheeps are often kept in crambled spaces where they cannot move freely or behave naturally and they face high levels of strees and pain during their short lives.
On the other hand, eating meat provides various benefits to human body. Firstly, meat is the best source of protien, vitamin B12, and iron with fewer calories which makes it ideal food for many individuals, especially for the health-concoius and body builders. Additionally, there are many regions where soil fertility is extremely low, making it impossible to grow crops and lentils. As a result, eating flesh remains the best option for residents to survive and for overall well-being.
In conclusion, although meat is known as great source of protien, vitamin B12, and iron, there are several drawbacks of meat consumption which cannot be overlooked. It includes spiritual violation and keeping animals in crambled areas. The Government should implement stricter regulation to improve the meat production by improving animal farms.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position ('I partially agree with this notion') and discussing both sides of the argument: the ethical and religious concerns regarding animal cruelty on one hand, and the nutritional and geographical necessity of meat consumption on the other. The student's ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of modern farming conditions ('chickens, goats, cows, and sheeps are often kept in crambled spaces') and nutritional needs. However, there is a factual error in the text regarding religion ('Muslim religion workship pigs as their God'), which slightly weakens the support for that specific point, though it does not detract from the overall task completion. The conclusion neatly summarises the main points and introduces a concluding thought. Overall, the task is addressed well, matching the Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile, but due to minor conceptual errors in examples, a Band 6.0 is well-justified.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. The essay is divided into distinct paragraphs: an introduction presenting the writer's stance, two body paragraphs examining opposing views ('On the one hand', 'On the other hand'), and a conclusion ('In conclusion'). Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the text, such as 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'As a result'. However, paragraphing and referencing show some mechanical traits. For instance, the transition into the conclusion reiterates arguments rather than synthesizing them seamlessly, and referencing is occasionally slightly loose. Nevertheless, the logical structure remains coherent throughout, making it a solid Band 6 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'spiritual violation', 'soil fertility', and 'mass production'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'health-concoius' (health-conscious), 'crambled' (crambled/cramped), 'agrue' (argue), 'protien' (protein), and 'sheeps' (sheep). Furthermore, there is a factual and collocational slip in the statement 'Muslim religion workship pigs as their God'. Despite these errors, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended message clearly without impeding communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing effectively (e.g., 'While I see the merit in that approach, we also need to consider...'). There are, however, several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('some people thinks'), incorrect pluralisation ('may animals', 'sheeps'), and spelling/typographical slips. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and the errors do not impede overall communication. Because the writer attempts complex structures with moderate success alongside frequent non-systematic errors, this performance aligns closely with the Band 6 descriptor.
