Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The student attempts to address the prompt regarding whether raising animals for food is cruel and whether people should stop eating meat. A position is stated in the introduction with 'I am agree with this idea', but the development of ideas is limited and disjointed. Body paragraph two seems to contradict the stance slightly by discussing why people eat meat for health benefits without strongly refuting these points, while paragraph three discusses traditions. Furthermore, the response is significantly under the length requirement, containing only 188 words compared to the minimum of 250 words. This results in an under-developed response that fails to fully satisfy the task requirements. Based on these limitations, a band score of 4.5 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing an attempt at a traditional essay structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is weak. The transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, such as moving from fish oil and B12 deficiency in paragraph two to summer barbeques in paragraph three. Cohesive devices are basic and occasionally misused, for example, 'Taking an example' instead of 'To take an example' or 'For instance'. Paragraphing is present, but the overall organization lacks smooth transitions and clear overarching progression, leading to a band score of 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with instances of unnatural word choice and spelling errors, such as 'non-vegatarian', 'man kind', and 'belive'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'nutritional benefits' and 'deficiency levels', but control is limited. There are noticeable lexical errors, including 'raising consumption' instead of 'rising consumption', which can cause minor difficulty for the reader. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey a simple message, it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands, fitting the descriptors for a band score of 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures frequently contain errors. Examples of grammatical mistakes include 'dependency of a man kind towards', 'I am agree', and 'some culture has restrictions'. Punctuation and article usage are also inconsistent throughout the text. While simple sentences are generally understandable, the frequency of grammatical errors in more complex attempts means that meaning is occasionally obscured. This level of grammatical control aligns with a band score of 5.0.
