Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that individuals should not consume flesh as it is really inhuman to raise animals only for human consumption. I completely agree with the given statement because raising and breeding innocent animals with the intention to sacrifice them not only disrupts the existing food chain, but it is also a kind of exploitation to them.

To begin with, people should avoid eating meat because it involves raising and sacrificing animals which, when carried out in the long run, can disturb the natural food chain. In the existing food chain, it is clearly mentioned the flow of food from one animal to the other and if human would depend too much on meat, it will exert more pressure on that particular species. Eventually, it will be unnnatural and cruel to raise those animals to meet one specific requirements.

Another reason not to consume meat by humans is that exploitation is being done to the animals. Animals also have emotions and keeping them in uncleaned space and feeding them only to sacrifice them releases various stress hormones into their bodies. Those increased levels of negative or fight and flight hormones can also make the human body unhealthy when the consume it. For instance, it was found in a research that cortisol levels in animals, before sacrificing them, was too high that it can create a lot of disturbance in human's body when they comsume that animal's meat.

To conclude, In my opinion one should not have non-veg meals because meat is created not only after massive expoitation to those hostile animals, but it also takes away food that was meant to be for some other species, which means it would disturb the food chain. On the other hand, human beings have plenty to vegetarian stuff to eat and complete their nutritional requiements.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student presents a clear and well-developed position throughout the response regarding the ethical and ecological arguments against eating meat. The task is fully addressed across multiple paragraphs, discussing both the disruption of the food chain and the exploitation of animals. In the introduction, the writer states, 'I completely agree with the given statement because raising and breeding innocent animals... disrupts the existing food chain, but it is also a kind of exploitation to them.' This position is maintained logically and supported with reasons and examples, such as the discussion on stress hormones and cortisol levels. Although some ideas like the food chain mechanics are slightly generalized, the response comfortably satisfies the requirements for Band 7, as all parts of the prompt are addressed with extended and supported ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving from the introduction to the food chain argument, the stress hormone argument, and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'To begin with,' 'Another reason,' and 'To conclude,' though some phrasing feels slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing throughout the essay remains clear. While it lacks the fluid sophistication of higher bands, the logical structure and smooth transition of ideas fit the criteria for a solid Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, attempting less common items such as 'disrupts', 'exploitation', and 'cortisol levels'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'inhuman' instead of 'inhumane', 'uncleaned space' instead of 'unsanitary conditions', 'vegetarian stuff' instead of 'plant-based options', and spelling errors like 'unnnatural' and 'expoitation'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies and awkward collocations, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede overall communication, placing it squarely in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures successfully, as seen in 'if human would depend too much on meat, it will exert more pressure...'. However, there are recurring grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'when the consume it' instead of 'when they consume it', 'hostile animals' instead of 'helpless animals', and tense inconsistencies in 'was too high that it can create'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are present, they rarely impede communication. The control over grammar aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
