Student answer (Band 6.5)

There are ongoing debate about whether people should stop eating meat because raising animals for human consumption is cruel. Although Iagree that animal should be trated humanely , I do not completely agree that people should never consume meat. In my view, the focus should be on improving animal welfare and encouraging responsible consumption.

On thre one hand, there are strong argument for reducing meat consumption. In some intensive farming system ,animal are kept in overcrowded condition and may have limited freedom to move . They can also experince stress and poor living condition before being slaughtered . Such practices raise serious ethical concerns because aminal are capable of pain and discomfort.Furthermore , excessive meat production can contibute to environment problem, deforestation and high water consumption.

On the other hand , completely eliminating meat from everyone diet may not be practical or necessary. Meat is an important source of peotien , iron ,vitamin , B12 and other nutrients practicularly for people whose diets are not carefully planned. In addition , many farmers depend on livestock for their livelihoods, especially in rural communities. Rather than banning meat , government could introduce stricter aminal -welfare regulation and require farms to provide aminal with adequate space , food and medical care .

In conclusion, I agree that cruel treatment of animal for food is unacceptable , but i do not believe that everyone should completely stop eating meat.A more balance approch would be to improve farming practies , protect aminal welfare and encourage , people to consume meat .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether eating meat should be banned due to animal cruelty. The writer introduces a balanced view, agreeing that animal welfare needs improvement while arguing against a total ban on meat consumption. Main ideas are supported with relevant points regarding nutrition, farmer livelihoods, and environmental concerns, such as 'excessive meat production can contribute to environment problem'. While the development is generally sufficient, some arguments could be extended further with more specific examples. Overall, the task is well-addressed, meeting the core requirements of presenting a well-rounded discussion and an unmistakable personal stance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped into logical paragraphs, with a distinct introduction, two body paragraphs addressing opposing sides, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to manage the flow of the argument. However, occasional minor cohesion lapses and repetitive phrasing in the conclusion ('encourage , people to consume meat') detract slightly from a higher band. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, incorporating less common items such as 'intensive farming', 'livelihoods', and 'ethical concerns'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'trated' instead of treated, 'aminal' instead of animal, 'peotien' instead of protein, and 'practiques' instead of practices. Additionally, collocation and grammatical forms of words sometimes falter, such as 'environment problem' instead of environmental problems. These vocabulary and spelling errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a solid Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'Although I agree that animal should be treated humanely, I do not completely agree that people should never consume meat.' There are frequent errors in punctuation, spacing around punctuation marks, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'There are ongoing debate', 'animal are kept', and 'government could introduce'. However, the majority of simple sentences are clear, and the grammatical errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the train of thought without confusion.
