Student answer (Band 6.0)

There has been a considerable debate on whether meat should be consumed by humans or it is a cruel human activity. I largely disagree with the viewpoint that meat should not be consumed by humans. Having meat in the form of chicken, beaf or mutton in the diet offers great health benefits.

People argue that killing animals for the sake of food is a selfish act and it should not be supported. It is believed that separating families is an unjustifiable act. For example, if a chicken is slaughtered for meat, its chicks are left without their mother. Although, it is true to some extent but it is the way nature exists. Humans have been eating meet for centuries.

I support the idea that meat should be a daily part of a person's diet as it offers many nutrients such zinc, potassium, that are necessary for a health body. In the recent years, there is an increasing number of people with low haemoglobin levels, calcium and white blood cells levels. Studies show that this trend is often observed in the vegetarians.

Although, some people avoid meat because of their religional believes, but that is a separate debate.

Additionally, compared to our ancestors, nowadays, nutrients deficiency is increasing steadily in younger genertation as most of the time these youngsters do not perefer to have chicken, beaf or meat.

In conclusion, some people prefer not to have meat. While there is another group of people who are in favour of having meat on a regular basis as its benefits from nutrients point of view are profound. I advocate the latter concept.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position (largely disagreeing that meat should never be eaten) and supporting it with reasons related to health benefits and natural human diet. The ideas are generally relevant, though some points are somewhat under-developed or rely on broad generalisations, such as claiming that nutrient deficiency is increasing in the younger generation due to avoiding meat. Examples like chicken and mutton are provided, but the arguments could benefit from deeper elaboration. However, the writer successfully maintains a consistent stance throughout the essay and covers the prompt adequately, aligning best with a Band 6.0 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct ideas, such as the counter-argument regarding animal slaughter and the main argument focusing on health and nutrition. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition 'Although, it is true to some extent but it is the way nature exists' links clauses awkwardly, and the use of connectors such as 'Additionally' and 'In conclusion' feels slightly formulaic. Referencing and cohesive devices are generally manageable, though not always smooth, placing this response securely at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'consumption', 'slaughtered', 'nutrients', and 'haemoglobin levels'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'beaf' instead of 'beef', 'religional believes' instead of 'religious beliefs', 'health body' instead of 'healthy body', and 'perefer' instead of 'prefer'. Furthermore, the phrase 'daily part of a person's diet' could be more idiomatic. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band, making Band 6.0 appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('if a chicken is slaughtered...') and concessive clauses ('Although, some people avoid meat...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the response. Examples include sentence fragments and awkward structures like 'In the recent years, there is an increasing number...' (tense/article issues) and mixing punctuation with conjunctions ('Although, some people avoid meat... but that is a separate debate'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, allowing the essay to meet the criteria for Band 6.0.
