Student answer (Band 6.0)

Humans have been eating meat since the stone ages. By itself, eating meat does not necessarily mean to be cruel to any animal, though the conditions in which those animals are kept or suffer from due to human actions can amount to cruelty.

The act of raising animals is a selfless act of love being shown to our fellow creatures and encompasses a wide array of acts including feeding, housing and hygeine care for them, all of which requires continous energy and efforts from their caregivers throught the whole year. During their lives many animals endure diseases which are often treatable, but those in the wilderness lack the appropriate level of care which they need and their suffering is prolonged. The wild animals also need continuous efforts for their survival which includes food searching and protection from predators which the farmed animals are usually provided for.

On the contrast, sometimes the farmed animals may have unpleasant experiences during their upbringing or sacrifice. For example, specifically in under developed or resource poor countries there is poor hygeine and overcrowding in animal sheds and lack of medical attention in case they develop any disease. The quality of food they get can be compromised too, both in quantity and quality. In addition some animals for example goats often need some supplements for proper growth which gets neglected in third world countries and they often develop bowed legs which is a cause for continous discomfort, and makes it harder for them to mobilize and is slow to settle even with medical treatment, as it happened to one of the lambs of my neighbour.

In my conclusion, more often the process of raising animals is cruelty free worldwide than not, and people should instead direct their efforts in improving the animal conditions globally and ensure their meat suppliers maintain those standards.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you disagree with a blanket ban on meat, while acknowledging that poor treatment can make animal farming cruel. You address both the general claim and the conditions animals may face, and the neighbour’s lamb provides a relevant personal example. However, some ideas are developed more fully than others. The comparison with wild animals suggests that farmed animals may receive better care, but it does not fully establish that raising them for consumption is not cruel; the claim that farming is “a selfless act of love” also needs qualification. To strengthen the response, explain more directly why humane rearing and slaughter can or cannot justify eating meat, and support the broad conclusion about conditions worldwide with clearer reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your position, the middle paragraphs consider care and mistreatment, and the conclusion returns to your view. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “On the contrast” signal a shift in argument. However, some connections are not fully clear or feel mechanical. The discussion of wild animals interrupts the focus on whether raising animals for food is cruel, while the final claim that cruelty-free farming is more common than cruelty is not clearly derived from the examples given. Improve progression by keeping each paragraph centred on one reason, linking examples explicitly to your position, and using a more precise contrast such as “By contrast.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including terms such as “overcrowding,” “medical attention,” “predators,” and “prolonged,” which help explain animal welfare. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “resource poor countries” and “bowed legs.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “sacrifice” is unclear in this context, “hygeine” is misspelled, and “mobilize” is not the natural verb for an animal’s difficulty moving. Phrases such as “selfless act of love” are also overly emotive for the argument and need qualification. Aim for precise, neutral wording and check spelling and collocations, especially when describing farming practices and animal health.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and subordinate clauses, as in “those in the wilderness lack the appropriate level of care which they need.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical problems do affect accuracy, though. In “all of which requires,” the verb should agree with the plural “acts”; “the conditions in which those animals are kept or suffer from” has an incomplete construction; and “as it happened to one of the lambs” is awkwardly attached to the preceding sentence. There are also long sentences with several linked ideas, which make relationships harder to follow. Review agreement, clause structure, and sentence boundaries, and divide complex explanations where needed.
